High-nitrate vegetable diet increases plasma nitrate and nitrite concentrations and reduces blood pressure in healthy women
Objective Epidemiological studies suggest that green leafy vegetables, which are high in dietary nitrate, are protective against CVD such as stroke. High blood pressure (BP) is a major risk factor for stroke and inorganic nitrate has been shown to reduce BP. The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that diets containing high-nitrate (HN) vegetables would increase plasma nitrate and nitrite concentrations and reduce BP in heal…
Introduction: The Gender Politics of Experiment
This special issue on contemporary women's experimental writing has its origins in a conference that took place at the University of Manchester in October 2013. The conference featured more than fifty papers, delivered by delegates from the United Kingdom, the United States, continental Europe, and beyond, alongside a poetry reading by contributors to the Infinite Difference anthology of "other poetries" by women, edited by Carrie Etter (2010), a…
Rereading Heterosexuality: Feminism, Queer Theory and Contemporary Fiction
Rachel Carroll’s new book focuses on a range of fictional representations “of female identities at odds with heterosexual norms” (1). Criticism of contemporary literature generally pays scant attention to gender and sexuality, while recent queer theory has tended to privilege performance and visual art over literature, so Rereading Heterosexuality will likely become a vital reference point for both contemporary literary studies and gender and sex…
Cleaving to the Scene of Shame: Stigmatized Childhoods in The End of Alice and Two Girls, Fat and Thin
This article addresses the ambivalent treatment of shame in Mary Gaitskill’s Two Girls, Fat and Thin (1991) and A. M. Homes’s The End of Alice (1996), examining shame’s relation to identity, gender, and narrative (particularly women’s writing). It reads the “cleaving to” the childhood scene of shame in these narratives of child abuse as a process of simultaneous identification and disidentification with/from that scene of shame, and references re…
The Global Land Data Assimilation System
A Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) has been developed. Its purpose is to ingest satellite- and ground-based observational data products, using advanced land surface modeling and data assimilation techniques, in order to generate optimal fields of land surface states and fluxes. GLDAS is unique in that it is an uncoupled land surface modeling system that drives multiple models, integrates a huge quantity of observation-based data, runs…
On Comparisons in a Notional Grammar
On Comparisons in a Notional Grammar
In the context of designing a communicative-pedagogical description of English oriented towards the needs of the syllabus designer and materials writer, this article re-examines the semantics and syntax of English comparative structures, which, it is argued, traditional reference grammars have presented in a misleading light. In particular, the paper challenges the common assumption (which can be traced back to the work of Jespersen) that the as.…

Verbal Protocol Patterns of College Dormitory Counselors
This study examines the relationship of Verbal Protocol Patterns (VPP) to the core facilitative conditions of Accurate Empathy (AE) and Warmth (W) described by Truax and Carkhuff. The specific question addressed is: "What is the degree of relationship of certain verbal protocol patterns of college resident counselors to the variables of Accurate Empathy and Warmth?" The findings suggest that in this study more reflective, non-judgmental counselor…
