Corporate History or the Education Business. A Case-Study
Traditionally, the History of Education has come close to the reality of private and religious schools from eminently educational and pedagogical interpretative models. Despite the fact that these institutions perform educational functions, they must not hide their status as companies, which operate in an educational market that requires, for the achievement of business survival and growth, the implementation of different commercial strategies. T…
The aim of this paper is to provide an approach to the graphic representation of the Ley General de Educación (LGE) and the discourses it has generated. To this end, a distinction is made between the official or public image and its means and times of projection, and the private images that make up the iconic legacy of this legislative reform from its beginning to the present day. This approach shows that the graphic representation of the LGE, co…
Natura et urbis in the socio-educational renovation of Barcelona City Council (1909–1933)
During the first third of the twentieth century, Barcelona turned into a metropolis with emerging industry.
Social and educational modernisation in Spain
During the Second Republic of Spain (1931–1939) and within the framework of ambitious social reform, the government of the Generalitat of Catalonia launched a social and educational assistance system. This new system would be independent, modern, and capable of surpassing the traditional welfare system based on religious charity that was predominant in Spain at the time. One of the initiatives performed to obtain funding consisted of the sale of …
Pedagogical innovation and music education in Spain
The aim of this paper is to analyse how the Dalcroze method was introduced to Spain and became known there, more specifically in the Catalonia of the Noucentisme movement, and why it made the greatest impact and was more widely disseminated in this particular region of Spain. Following a summary of Dalcroze’s contributions to music education, an outline is given of how the Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios or Committee for Extended Studies (th…

This article analyses photography as a tool for reinforcing textual discourses in the written press and supporting the popularisation of certain methods and practices in the illustrated press and magazines. The photographs will not be analysed as educational documents or testimony to educational activities but rather in an effort to explore the attempts to illustrate a message graphically so as to influence public opinion and change society’s per…
