  • Cultivating an ‘earthly paradise’: Nature, informal education, and the contested politics of youth citizenship, 1910s–1940s

    Siân Roberts•ARTICLE•History of Education•2020

This article discusses contested discourses of youth citizenship in Birmingham, UK, in the early twentieth century. It explores how socially committed Quakers and labour and co-operative activists in the city drew on transnational social and political critiques of the urban, and a powerful discourse of nature as facilitator of a morally and physically healthier citizen, to adopt pedagogic responses aimed at securing a more peaceful and egalitaria…

  • Children, Propaganda and War, 1914-1918: An exploration of visual archives in English city

  • Education, art, and exile: Cultural activists and exhibitions of refugee children’s art in the UK during the Second World War

    Siân Roberts•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

During the 1930s and 1940s art increasingly came to be used as a therapeutic tool with children who were perceived as damaged by their experiences of war or displacement. This article explores two related exhibitions – Children’s Art from All Countries (1941) and The War as Seen by Children (1943) – which provided a platform for children’s impressions and experiences of war as seen through their drawings, whilst also raising money and awareness f…

  • A ‘Position of Peculiar Responsibility’: Quaker Women and Transnational Humanitarian Relief, 1914–24

    Open Access•Siân Roberts•ARTICLE•Quaker Studies•2016

Given the scale of Quaker women’s involvement in humanitarian responses to the First World War, they have received remarkably little attention in either Quaker historiography or the study of global conflict in this period. This article explores the responses of a network of Quaker women in Birmingham and their sense of personal responsibility to intervene on behalf of non-combatants affected by the war at home and abroad. It takes the relief work…

  • Activism, agency and archive: British activists and the representation of educational colonies in Spain during and after the Spanish Civil War

    Siân Roberts•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2013

In the late 1930s the Spanish Civil War captured the international imagination to an extraordinary degree. As in other countries British men and women were moved to intervene directly and the memory of the war, and of British participation in it, has held an enduring appeal in the UK. The Civil War was also notable for its use of the visual as a weapon of propaganda, and the Spanish Republican Government deployed visual imagery to great effect as…

  • I promised them that I would tell England about them”: A woman teacher activist's life in popular humanitarian education

    Siân Roberts•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2011

Arguments for popular education in the twentieth century were articulated through a variety of media including publications, exhibitions and the press. Such arguments were also often directly linked to ideas about change and social justice. This article addresses both of these elements – the media and social justice. In so doing it makes a contribution to the largely neglected field of study that is international humanitarian activism by women. I…

  • Exhibiting children at risk: Child art, international exhibitions and Save the Children Fund in Vienna, 1919–1923

    Siân Roberts•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2009•Cited by: 6

In November 1920 an exhibition of children’s art by the pupils of Franz Cizek’s Viennese Juvenile Art Class opened to the public in London under the auspices of the Save the Children Fund and went on to tour internationally. Supported by a network of influential educators, artists, architects, political and humanitarian activists, the exhibition represents an early example of a practice that became increasingly common during the twentieth century…
