On the up and up: The job mobility of skilled return migrants
This paper examines the labor market incorporation of skilled Indian migrants returning home after working in the United States. I analyze a novel dataset of 7,177 time-varying transnational employment histories from LinkedIn using logistic regression and survival analysis. I find that skilled Indian migrants experience occupational upgrades when re-entering their home labor market, buoyed by foreign human capital and compensating for US legal st…
Forecasting Ukrainian Refugee Flows With Organic Data Sources
Although European countries seek to understand the volume and destinations of forced migrant flows out of Ukraine, it is difficult to collect timely data for many reasons including dangerous conditions for on-the-ground survey data collection. This article combines different organic data to predict forced migration from Ukraine to five neighboring countries receiving refugees: Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Moldova, and Hungary. We pair online Ukrain…
Using Organic Data in Migration Research
This paper introduces a special issue of International Migration Review and overviews the promise and limitations of organic data for migration research. We explain different approaches to collecting and analyzing timely open-source organic data, and how it can be integrated with traditional administrative and survey data. After identifying the promise and limitations of specific organic data sources, we offer two empirical examples that illustra…
Global Gender Gaps in the International Migration of Professionals on LinkedIn
This paper examines gender differentials in the international migration of professionals, and how this varies by country, industry, age, and years of experience. We leverage data from LinkedIn, the largest professional networking website, to construct Immigrant and Emigrant Gender Gap Indexes (iGGI and eGGI). These indexes measure inflows and potential outflows. The findings indicate that, among LinkedIn users, the global population of immigrant …
Greener pastures: Why Indian international students leave the US labor market
This paper revisits conventional wisdom on US degree premiums for immigrant workers and shows that, despite the benefits of a US degree, migration policies and substandard labor conditions contribute to international student motivations to return home. Using two original datasets, I find that about a third of Indian-born US graduates leave the US, seeking employment opportunities abroad and a respite from US work visa restrictions. I draw on 105 …
A framework for mapping and monitoring human-ocean interactions in near real-time during Covid-19 and beyond
The homogenizing and diversifying effects of migration policy in the internationalization of higher education
The gendered occupational value of a U.S. education for skilled Indian immigrants
This article revisits conventional understandings of gender differences in occupational attainment through the context of highly skilled legal migration in the United States. Drawing on a unique combination of nationally representative survey data of Indian lawful permanent residents and in‐depth interviews with skilled Indian migrants holding employer‐sponsored visas, we find that a U.S. education has a large premium in occupational prestige sco…
Work visas and return migration: How Migration Policy Shapes Global Talent
The recruitment and retention of foreign talent are crucial dimensions of the global education and labour markets. This paper examines how entwined migration policies and corporate practices shape the development and flow of international skill. I pair an original dataset of employment histories with 105 interviews with skilled migrants and institutional actors to examine the process of skill and knowledge formation among foreign-born workers in …
Pathways to Permanence: Legal Status Transitions as a Key Mechanism in Skilled Migrant Selection and Settlement
Despite impassioned debates about immigration reform brewing in the U.S. government, researchers know remarkably little about how immigration policy shapes migration behavior. There is still much to learn about the composition of specific classes of admission, how long migrants stay in the United States, and the legal channels they follow to permanent residency or emigration. This paper takes a life course perspective on skilled migration to exam…
