  • Semi-automatic detection of building stones and wall segments of archaeological ruins

Open Access•Erel Uziel, Motti Zohar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2025•References: 2

This study presents a semi-automatic methodology for detecting building stones and wall segments in archaeological research, using drone imagery and deep learning algorithms. The immediate outputs of the methodology are a georeferenced stones layer, with each stone detected as a separate instance, and a site plan layer, composed of stones considered part of detected wall segments. We developed this model via nine sites of varying size with differ…

  • Geo-Referencing and Analysis of Entities Extracted from Old Drawings and Photos Using Computer Vision and Deep Learning Algorithms

Open Access•Liat David, Motti Zohar et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2023

This study offers a quantitative solution that automates the creation of a historical timeline starting with old drawings from the beginning of the 18th century and ending with present-day photographs of the Old City of Jerusalem. This is performed using GIScience approaches, computer vision, and deep learning. The motivation to select the Old City of Jerusalem is the substantial availability of old archival drawings and photographs, owing to the…

  • A land without people? The GIScience approach to estimating the population of Ottoman Palestine towards the end of the 19th-century

  • Follow the road

    Motti Zohar•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 15

At the beginning of the twentieth century, a British mapping team led by Captain S. F. Newcombe surveyed and mapped the Negev region, Sinai, and western Jordan. The map was mainly produced for military use. Consequently, it included a network of branched routes, water supplies and facilities, and topographic contours. This study used this map to examine the development of routes in the Negev region between the beginning of and until the end of th…

  • Why Is the Minaret So Short? Evidence for Earthquake Damage on Mt Zion

Motti Zohar, Rehav Rubin et al.•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•2015•References: 1

On top of King David's Sepulchre at Mt Zion there is an Ottoman minaret known as al-Nabi Da'ud. Compared with other minarets in Jerusalem, al-Nabi Da'ud seems to be somewhat shorter, and has a squat-like appearance. To track why it is shorter than other minarets, we inspected written historical sources, a sequence of old drawings dated between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries and analysed the minaret's metric proportions. In drawin…
