  • The Settlement of the Poor and the Rise of the Form in England, c.1662–1780

    Naomi Tadmor•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2017•Citada por: 5

From 1662 to 1712 new laws changed the relationship of the poor to their places of habitation by formalizing criteria – regarding property, employment, and kinship – without which ‘settlement’ could not be gained, and a migrant could be removed. In the 1700s, concepts of ‘settlement’ became a part of the national culture. The article examines an important if unintended consequence of the piecemeal legislation: the creation of a large body of admi…

  • People of the Covenant and the English Bible

    Open Access•Naomi Tadmor•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•2012•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

The paper shows how the important theological and Anglo-biblical term ‘Covenant’ was formulated in the course of successive biblical translations, from the original Hebrew and Greek to the King Kames Bible. It suggests that the use of the term in English biblical versions reflected – and in turn propelled – the increasingly prominent Covenant theology. Once coined in the vernacular Scriptures, moreover, the term was applied to religious political…

  • Degrees of Privilege

    Naomi Tadmor•ARTICLE•Journal of Victorian Culture•2011

On 12 July 1789, as he toured through the French countryside, the social commentator Arthur Young noted the following encounter. ‘Walking up a long hill, to ease my mare’, he says, ‘I was joined by a poor woman, who complained of the times.’ She and her husband had ‘but a morsel of land, one cow, and a poor little horse’. They had to work hard to maintain their children and pay a crippling burden of taxes. ‘This woman, at no great distance’, Youn…

  • Early modern English kinship in the long run

    Open Access•Naomi Tadmor•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•2010•Citada por: 1

The article highlights the significance of alliances of blood and marriage in early modern England and beyond, including both positive and negative relations among kin. Examining different historiographical approaches, it emphasizes the role of kinship in explanations of historical change and continuity. Rather than focusing on the isolated nuclear family or, conversely, on an alleged decline of kinship, it highlights the importance of enmeshed p…

  • Women and Wives

    Naomi Tadmor•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2006•Citada por: 1

The article shows the ways in which a language of marriage became normative in early modern English translations of the Hebrew Bible. Focusing on successive biblical versions (especially from Tyndales translation based for the first time on the Hebrew original, published in 1530/1, to the Authorized Version published in 1611), it shows how Hebrew terms relating to a variety of domestic and sexual union were rendered in English biblical versions i…
