  • Virtual reality peer-to-peer learning

Open Access•Claire Donald, Sevinj Rustamova et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2026

Virtual reality offers exciting potential as a digital learning tool in Higher Education where users benefit from immersion within interactive environments. Similarly, peer-to-peer learning is a well-established pedagogical approach known to improve academic outcomes, social skills, and cost-saving. While both VR and peer learning have demonstrated benefits individually, limited research has examined how these approaches can be meaningfully integ…

  • Backwards counterfactuals

    Open Access•Stephanie Rennick, Neil McDonnell•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Quarterly•2025

This paper offers two novel conceptual tools: one concerning the semantics of counterfactuals and what should be held fixed when assessing them (the modal moat), and the other concerning the pragmatics of counterfactual assertions and how to avoid the potential pitfalls of meaning more than we say (antecedent gluttony). These allow us to address existing issues with the assessment of backwards counterfactuals within a framework that applies equal…

  • Transitivity and proportionality in causation

    Open Access•Neil McDonnell•ARTICLE•Synthese•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 18

It is widely assumed that causation is transitive, but putative counterexamples abound. These examples come in three varieties: switching cases, short circuit cases, and what I will call mismatch cases. In this paper I focus on the mismatch variety, which is widely taken to be the easiest to resolve. I will first introduce the cases and the existing strategy for dealing with them, then present a new counterexample which is immune to that strategy…

  • Causal exclusion and the limits of proportionality

  • The Non‐Occurrence of Events

    Open Access•Neil McDonnell•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

event occurs.Yet once we attend to the question, we surely see that it has no determinate answer.(Lewis 2004, 186) Lewis 's original (1973) counterfactual analysis of causation states that one event is a cause of another iff there exists a chain of counterfactual dependence between them. One event counterfactually depends on another iff the following counterfactual conditional (or causal conditional) is true:This is to be read as follows: if event…
