  • The fundamental facts can be logically simple

    Open Access•Alexander Jackson•ARTICLE•Noûs•2024

I like the view that the fundamental facts are logically simple, not complex. However, some universal generalizations and negations may appear fundamental, because they cannot be explained by logically simple facts about particulars. I explore a natural reply: those universal generalizations and negations are true because certain logically simple facts—call them φφ— are the fundamental facts . I argue that this solution is only available given so…

Founded in 1916, the Portsmouth Ladies FC were one of many women’s football teams active during the First World War. Building upon the work of Jean Williams, Patrick Brennan and Ian Nannestad, this article seeks to broaden our knowledge of the development of women’s wartime football. Its principal sources are images held by National Football Museum, the Pompey History Society, along with newly digitised newspapers. This article explores two aspec…

  • Appearances, Rationality, and Justified Belief

    Open Access•Alexander Jackson•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 5

One might think that its seeming to you that p makes you justified in believing that p. After all, when you have no defeating beliefs, it would be irrational to have it seem to you that p but not believe it. That view is plausible for perceptual justification, problematic in the case of memory, and clearly wrong for inferential justification. I propose a view of rationality and justified belief that deals happily with inference and memory. Appear…

  • The Chelsea Chronicle , 1905 to 1913

    Alexander Jackson•ARTICLE•Soccer and Society•2010•References: 2

This article draws on collections from the Chelsea F.C. Chronicle, from 1905 to 1913, to highlight the importance of club match programmes and their potential use as a rich source of information for the football historian. It also intends to make a contribution to our understanding of Edwardian and southern professional football. A thematic analysis of the contents of the Chronicle shows how it contributed to the invented tradition of professiona…
