Criminal Justice Students’ Perceptions amid George Floyd’s Death and Covid-19
This work explores the extent to which the death of George Floyd in May of 2020 and the COVID-19 crisis affected criminal justice students' perceptions of career commitment and motivations toward public service. A survey was administered to a cohort of criminal justice majors at one Michigan university who were between their junior and senior years, once in the spring semester of 2020, before Floyd's death and the civil unrest that followed, and …
Mobile Mapping and its Potential for Faculty Collaboration and Undergraduate Student Learning
Undergraduate research is a high impact practice for student learning, but the key is often to match projects with tools that build students’ skills as they learn about a topic. Digital tools now profligate to the point that they are almost overwhelming to the student and teacher alike. These tools, coupled with computing have forged an entirely new field: digital humanities. Our manuscript discusses how one easy to use, student friendly digital …
The Relationship Between Police Minority Equity Levels and Performance Outcomes
The study explores the relationship between minority officer equity and performance outcomes in 200 Florida municipal departments. Equity level explains a small amount of the variance in either efficiency score (R2 =.01) or clearance rate (R2 =.03) outcomes, though under-equity significantly and positively relates to clearance rate whe…
Using GIS to Apply Learning across the Undergraduate Criminal Justice Curriculum
Geographical information systems (GIS) utilization has exploded in criminal justice over the last decade, but there is scant mention of pedagogical models published in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education, with a content analysis revealing just one GIS-based article published since 2001. This work proposes a GIS-based pedagogical model to move the discussion beyond crime mapping to applying, integrating, and enhancing learning across the cri…

Joyce and Phenomenology
What is the meaning of Joyce's Ulysses? There are many more or less adequate interpretations: Joyce can be read in many ways. Here I propose a phenomenological reading. This is not to say that every word and allusion can fit very nicely into some set category called « phenomenology ». Rather it is only to -assert that in terms of aims and methods, Ulysses can only be seen as a concrete application of what Husserl means by phenomenology. Phenomeno…
