  • Quantifying nitrogen loss hotspots and mitigation potential for individual fields in the US Corn Belt with a metamodeling approach

Open Access•Tae‐Gon Kim, Zhenong Jin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

The high productivity in the US Corn Belt is largely enabled by the consumption of millions of tons of manufactured fertilizer. Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer has been pervasive in this region, and the unrecovered N eventually escaped from croplands in forms of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission and N leaching. Mitigating these negative impacts is hindered by a lack of practical information on where to focus and how much mitigation …

  • Toward sustainable climate change adaptation

Open Access•Yi Yang, Beibei Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2020

Industrial ecology (IE) has made great contributions to climate change mitigation research, in terms of its systems thinking and solid methodologies such as life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, and environmentally extended input–output analysis. However, its potential contribution to climate change adaptation is unclear. Adaptation has become increasingly urgent in a continuously changing climate, especially in developing countries, whi…

  • Restoring Abandoned Farmland to Mitigate Climate Change on a Full Earth

    Open Access•Yi Yang, Sarah E Hobbie et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2020

  • Unique water scarcity footprints and water risks in US meat and ethanol supply chains identified via subnational commodity flows

    Open Access•Kate A Brauman, Andrew L Goodkind et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Within the US, supply chains aggregate agricultural production and associated environmental impacts in specific downstream products and companies. This is particularly important for meat and ethanol, which consume nearly half of global crop production as feed and feedstocks. However, lack of data has thus far limited the ability to trace inputs and impacts of commodity crops through domestic supply chains. For the first time, we use a commodity-f…

  • Elevation and Child Linear Growth in Nepal

Open Access•Gerald Shively, Timothy Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2020

The relationship between elevation of residence and a child's linear growth was studied using data for 8824 children below the age of 5 years born between 2001 and 2016 at elevations ranging from 50 to 3200 m above sea level in Nepal. Multiple regression was used to measure the role of a variety of household and community factors in explaining the observed elevation effect. A negative association was found between elevation and linear growth that…

  • Climate Benefits of Increasing Plant Diversity in Perennial Bioenergy Crops

    Open Access•Yi Yang, Evelyn C Reilly et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2019

Bioenergy from perennial grasses mitigates climate change via displacing fossil fuels and storing atmospheric CO2 belowground as soil carbon. Here, we conduct a critical review to examine whether increasing plant diversity in bioenergy grassland systems can further increase their climate change mitigation potential. We find that compared with highly productive monocultures, diverse mixtures tend to produce as great or greater yields. In particula…

  • Hotspot Scenario Analysis: Comparative Streamlined LCA Approaches for Green Supply Chain and Procurement Decision Making

    Open Access•Rylie E O Pelton, Timothy M Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2015

Increasingly, organizations are working to reduce the environmental footprint of their supply chains. The use of environmentally preferable purchasing criteria is one strategy organizations use to address this goal. However, evaluating the environmental performance of these criteria (e.g., recycled content, biodegradable, renewable, and so on) has remained elusive. Life cycle assessment (LCA) can measure the impact reduction potential of sourcing…
