Competing institutional logics in public-private hospital arrangements in England
There has been an increase in partnership working between the NHS and the private healthcare sector in recent years, particularly for elective surgical care. The private sector now delivers a increasing share of NHS-funded services and alongside this privately funded healthcare has continued to grow. As consultants increasingly work across the NHS and the private sector, they must deal with complex and sometimes conflicting institutional demands.…
Mind the Gap: A Qualitative Study of Patients’ Experiences of Acute Elective Care Across the NHS and the Private Sector in England
Examining the hospital costs of children born into relative deprivation in England
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between being born into relative deprivation and hospital costs during childhood. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: We created a birth cohort using Hospital Episode Statistics for children born in NHS hospitals in 2003/2004. The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) rank at birth was missing from 75% of the baby records, so we linked mother and baby records to obtain the IMD decile from the mother's …
How Do Undiagnosed Symptoms of Maternal Psychological Distress During the Postnatal Period Affect Child Developmental Outcomes
This research highlights the lack of effectiveness of existing treatment for maternal psychological distress both to benefit child development and to provide long-term symptom remediation for women. Future research could aim to identify more effective treatments for both women and children
Alan Maynard: A Sceptical Economist and His View of Health Care and Health Policy
Professor Alan Maynard applied both his wit and wisdom to the analysis of health care and health policy for over five decades. As a leading health economist, he made an immense contribution to the analysis and understanding of many of the key issues that are still at the heart of the current debates about the National Health Service. His academic interests were wide ranging, including health systems and reform, performance, workforce, regulation,…
Does Administrative Data Reflect Individual Experience? Comparing an Index of Poverty with Individually Collected Data on Financial Well-being in a Multi-Ethnic Community
The Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) uses administrative data to count children living in households in receipt of both in-work and out-of-work means-tested benefits and provides small area ranking as an indicator of child poverty in neighbourhoods. Benefit take-up rates within an area will affect its reliability. We aimed to examine benefit take-up rates and compare area ranking by the IDACI with ranking using individually rep…
Do Risk Factors for Post-partum Smoking Relapse Vary According to Marital Status
P1-496 An examination of the psychometric properties of the GHQ-28 subscales in a bi-ethnic antenatal sample in the UK: Preliminary results from the born in Bradford cohort
Introduction Born in Bradford is a large multi-ethnic birth cohort drawn from the North of England. As background to comparing mental health across our sample we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and invariance testing for each of the four-factor seven-item subscales of the GHQ-28 for a bi-ethnic subpopulation. Methods We examined data from White (N=2011) and Pakistani-origin (N=1516) women who responded to the GHQ-28 in English. We …
P1-294 Risk factors for poor mental health during pregnancy from the born in Bradford cohort: Early results from a bi-ethnic sample
Introduction Born in Bradford is a large multi-ethnic birth cohort drawn from the North of England. We describe the risk factors associated with poor mental health in pregnancy for White and Pakistani-origin women. Methods We examined data from White (N=1901) and Pakistani (N=1360) women who completed the GHQ-28 in English. We used univariate and multivariate logistic regression to examine socio-demographic risk factors associated with scoring ab…
Just look for an ashtray: Pragmatic factors associated with smoking relapse postpartum
Objective Most women who stop smoking during their pregnancy will relapse within the first 6 months after birth, with health risks to the mother and family. There have been few UK-specific studies identifying factors associated with relapse. Such information would help health care providers identify those most at risk so that extra support and resources can be targeted. We examined whether a small set of factors that are potentially readily measu…
