Postdigital Nature Connection
The interrelations between humans and nature have earned significant scholarly focus in recent years (Ives et al. 2017 ; Barrable and Booth 2020 ; Chawla 2020 ), with growing recognition that contemporary societies are increasingly disconnected from the ecosystems which sustain them (Beery et al. 2023 ). This disconnection is often framed within the context of escalating climate and ecological crises (Zylstra et al. 2014 ), declining public healt…

Young people's networked constructions of nature
How young people interpret and engage with nature is an important consideration within our current biodiversity and climate crises. What remains less clear are the ways in which online, networked, spaces underpin young people's relationships with nature, and what consequences these spaces may have for in‐person nature interactions. Given the ubiquitousness of networked spaces in society, it has been argued that day‐to‐day life is increasingly ‘po…
Nature recovery and regional development
This paper provides an overview of the cultural, political and policy changes that are creating new economic opportunities through nature recovery. We introduce research being undertaken with an alliance of English local authorities in rural–peripheral regions to explore these opportunities and their implications for local and regional development paths. The paper highlights the questions driving the project and introduces the economic sectors in…
Postdigital Outdoor and Environmental Education
2021).As Jandrić et al. (2018: 893) put forward, 'we are increasingly no longer in a world where digital technology and media is separate, virtual, "other" to a "natural" human and social life'.This adds yet more layers to the OEE endeavour and presents a messy and chaotic space from which young people may begin to make sense of their outdoor learning experiences. This raises the question: In a time of climate and ecological crisis, what impact mi…
Postdigital Videogames Literacies
This article is a collective response to the 2003 iteration of James Paul Gee’s What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy . Gee’s book, a foundational text for those working in game studies, literacy studies, and education, identified 36 principles of ‘good learning’ which he argued were built into the design of good games, and which have since been used to unsettle the landscape of formal education. This article brings togeth…
Instructor Perspectives on Mobile Technologies and Social Media in Practice
Background: The use or non-use of mobile technologies and social media in residential outdoor adventurous education (OAE) remains contested and generates an often-cited for-and-against argument in both theory and practice. Purpose: This qualitative study explored instructor perceptions of mobile technologies and social media in their practice as members of instructional staff at the United Kingdom's Outward Bound Trust. Methodology/Approach: Grou…

They provide the reader with a comprehensive 'look back' through the development and position of education and educational research since 1975.For instance, I have enjoyed revisiting McNamara's (1979) critical stance on the introduction of the word 'paradigm' to the vocabulary of educational research, and read for the first time the seven questions posed by Mortimore (2000) at the 1999 British Educational Research Association (BERA) conference, w…
E‘Ride on!’
Virtual environments as spaces for leisure are rapidly emerging within the zeitgeist of 21st century leisure practices. One such environment is the Zwift cycling and running app which provides a series of virtual worlds where cyclists and runners can train, race, and socialise with a global community from their own home. As four authors, we are all in some way curious or engaged with Zwift as a platform for our own leisure. We therefore developed…
Dissolving the Dichotomies Between Online and Campus-Based Teaching
This article is a collective response to the 2020 iteration of The Manifesto for Teaching Online . Originally published in 2011 as 20 simple but provocative statements, the aim was, and continues to be, to critically challenge the normalization of education as techno-corporate enterprise and the failure to properly account for digital methods in teaching in Higher Education. The 2020 Manifesto continues in the same critically provocative fashion,…
