Concurrent sourcing, the simultaneous use of in-house provision and contracting out, remains underexplored. This study examines how the allocation between in-house and contracted modes in service delivery portfolios affects service performance. Using panel data on children’s social care services provided by English local authorities from 2014 to 2023, we find that concentrated portfolios, in which one delivery mode dominates and the other plays a…

The relationships between care burden and sleep quality in migrant care workers
Care burden can compromise the sleep quality of migrant care workers (MCW); however, factors that influence this adverse effect remain unknown. This study aims to examine the psychological and behavioral factors that mediate the relationship between care burden and poor sleep quality in MCW in Taiwan. MCW in Taiwan were recruited and interviewed using online computer-assisted data collection system. Care burden was measured based on the total num…
A Replication of “Did New Public Management Matter? An Empirical Analysis of the Outsourcing and Decentralization Effects on Public Sector Size”
This manuscript replicates and extends the work of Alonso et al. focusing on the effects of New Public Management practices—outsourcing and decentralization—on public sector size in terms of government expenditure and employment. The narrow replication confirms the original findings: outsourcing increases government expenditure, whereas decentralization reduces it, with neither practice affecting employment. The wide replications add nuances: whi…

Does political ideology still matter? A meta‐analysis of government contracting decisions
In the field of government contracting research, whether and to what extent political ideology drives government contracting has been a subject of ongoing debate for decades. This study conducts a comprehensive meta‐analysis, incorporating 418 effect sizes drawn from 68 previous studies spanning over three decades. The findings indicate that right‐wing political ideology generally yields a significant, positive effect on driving contracting out. …
The associations between working conditions and subjective sleep quality among female migrant care workers
Background: Subjective sleep quality may reflect the mental well-being of migrant care workers; however, the related occupational factors remain unclear. This study examines the association between the characteristics of care labor and the subjective sleep quality of female migrants. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, Southeast Asian migrant care workers in Taiwan were recruited using convenience sampling. Data on working conditions, includi…
Public Sector Unionization and Government Contracting
Within the large body of literature on government contracting, the effect of public sector unionization on contracting out is still unsettled even after decades of research. Previous literature proposes that unionization may both inhibit and motivate contracting out, making the net effect difficult to predict. Through a meta-analysis of 232 effects drawn from 49 existing studies spanning over four decades, we find that jurisdictions with higher l…
The impact of potentially modifiable risk factors for stroke in a middle-income area of China
Aims: To reveal the impact of eleven risk factors on stroke and provide estimates of the prevention potential. Methods: We completed a multicenter case-control study in Jiangxi, China, a middle-income area. Neuroimaging examination was performed in all cases. Controls were stroke-free adults recruited from the community in the case concentration area. Conditional logistic regression and unconditional logistic regression were used for subgroup ana…
The heterogeneity of the Covid-19 pandemic and national responses
The COVID-19 pandemic manifests varied outcomes due to differences in countries' vulnerability, preparedness and response. Our study rationalizes why South Korea, New Zealand, Thailand, Australia and China performed better than the US, Italy and Brazil. By identifying the strengths of low burden countries and weaknesses of hotspot countries, we elucidate factors constituting an effective pandemic response that can be adopted by leaders in prepara…
