John H. Walton. The Lost World of the Prophets
This book is one of seven thus far published in John Walton’s Lost World series, which covers topics such as the flood, the conquest, and so on. Like the others, Walton has structured this book into chapters that each defend a proposition, which doubles as the chapter title. (Since the table of contents is readily accessible online, I will not take up space in this essay rehearsing the propositions here.) Despite the wording of the book title, Wa…
Conversations on Dictionaries
How did dictionaries come to be? When and how did they originate in a specific language? Who was involved in that origin story? How have they evolved over time? What is the tension between scholarly and commercial, and between prescriptive and descriptive, dictionaries? What is the politics behind each dictionary? And what is the connection between dictionaries and nation-building? This fascinating book has the answers. It brings together a colle…
Linguistic Theory and the Biblical Text
This volume is the result of the 2021 session of the Linguistics and the Biblical Text research group of the Institute for Biblical Research, which addresses the history, relevance, and prospects of broad theoretical linguistic frameworks in the field of biblical studies. Cognitive Linguistics, Functional Grammar, generative linguistics, historical linguistics, complexity theory, and computational analysis are each allotted a chapter, outlining t…
Postclassical Greek and Septuagint Lexicography
Some Problems with Talking about ‘Septuagint Greek’
While all agree that the language of the Septuagint does not represent a Jewish dialect, scholarship has nevertheless struggled to find ways of discussing the language of the Septuagint without implying a similar idea. Just as the notions of “biblical Greek” and “Jewish Greek” have rightly come under scrutiny, so also must scholars carefully reconsider “Septuagint Greek” and similar sobriquets. While admittedly helpful shorthand, such terminology…
The significance spectrum and EIA significance determinations
The concept of significance is fundamental to environmental impact assessment (EIA). Even though there are many guidelines describing technical characteristics of impacts (such as magnitude, geographic extent, extent and frequency) that should be considered, there has remained a long-standing need for increased clarity on how significance determinations are ultimately reached by significance determiners, those who, on behalf of governments, make …
Improving quality
Reviews of environmental impact assessment (EIA) practice, particularly by industrial proponents, have highlighted common shortfalls. EIA would benefit from more ‘common sense’, which is not very common. For example, issue scoping usually includes too many inconsequential factors, and issues not directly affecting project decisions. Consideration of significance is often vague, misleading or inconsistent. Quality of environmental impact statement…
Improving the practice of cumulative effects assessment in Canada
This paper presents the findings of a critical evaluation of 12 Canadian cumulative effects assessment (CEA) documents, and offers responsive interpretation and recommendations. The evaluation focused on environmental impact assessment (EIA) documents for which CEAs have been required. A variety of types of document have been reviewed — different jurisdictions (both provincial and federal), different types of project, and different levels of EIA …
Reflections of an environmental assessment panel member
This article documents my personal recollections and reflections on being an environmental assessment panel member. While I have served on five different panels, the main focus is on that for the Alberta-Pacific Pulp Mill, proposed for, and subsequently constructed in, central Alberta, Canada. Rather than investigating the impacts of the pulp mill and the findings of the panel, which are well documented elsewhere, the article deals with my person…
Cumulative effects assessment
Cumulative effects assessment (CEA) for environmental impact assessments are required by some Canadian and American legislation. However, there is confusion concerning exactly what CEA involves. This clarifies the requirements of CEA and illustrates its use in a number of case studies.Practitioners must: identify valued ecosystem components (VECs) affected by the proposed project; determine what other past, present and future human activities have …
Extending environmental management systems principles to environmental assessment
Natural Resources Canada is expanding the application of environmental auditing to fulfill a key requirement of its environmental management system (EMS) as applied to environmental impact assessment (EIA). Such an evaluation progamme requires endorsement and commitment from senior management. It helps to define legal and policy requirements, significantly influences the implementation of the EMS, provides the foundation for examining the managem…
Characterizing stone tools by rock-magnetic methods
Of the many petrophysical properties such as acoustic velocity, dielectric constant, electrical resistivity, etc., the widest variation is shown by magnetic responses. Susceptibilities commonly range over 4 orders of magnitude between different lithic samples. Thus, magnetic properties show great potential for the characterization, provenance-determination, thermal history, and treatment of stone tools and masonry. In order of increasing complexi…
