A Non‐parametric Estimation of Productivity with Idiosyncratic and Aggregate Shocks: The Role of Research and Development (R&D) and Corporate Tax
We develop a non‐parametric technique framework for estimating firm‐level Total Factor Productivity (TFP). Our paper has two major novelties: first, we propose a modelling of productivity with both firm‐idiosyncratic factors and aggregate shocks. Second, we apply the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique that offers a numerical integration of productivity outside the posterior overcoming the restrictive assumptions about the relation…

Productivity and Performance: A GMM approach
In this paper we propose a single‐step generalized method of moments (GMM) approach to estimate a production function with multiple quasi‐fixed and variable inputs as well as productivity and inefficiency. Our approach relies on the system consisting of the production function, the first‐order conditions of expected profit maximization with respect to the variable inputs, as well as general formulations for dynamic productivity and inefficiency. …

Estimating Monotone Concave Stochastic Production Frontiers
Recent research shows that the search for Bayesian estimation of concave production functions is a fruitful area of investigation. In this article, we use a flexible cost function that satisfies globally the monotonicity and curvature properties to estimate features of the production function. Specification of a globally monotone concave production function is a difficult task which is avoided here by using the first-order conditions for cost min…
Covid-19 and gradual adjustment in the tourism, hospitality, and related industries
In this Note, we take up the problem of post-COVID-19 gradual adjustment in the industry as well as whether and to what extent opening with limited capacity might be feasible. We find that (i) reopening gradually requiring only nonnegative profits is quite feasible but (ii) reopening requiring the same level of profit as in the pre-COVID-19 period is considerably more difficult, and seems feasible by reopening at capacity near 33%. Lower capaciti…
Testing for Collinearity using Bayesian Analysis
Testing for collinearity continues to be a controversial issue in the literature. Multicollinearity detection criteria, such as the variance inflation factor, often fail to detect the true extent of multicollinearity. In this article, we propose utilizing the Bayesian approach as an attractive alternative. Under the Bayesian approach, we recommend comparing the marginal posterior of regression parameters under two different priors. If the differe…
Constraints in models of production and cost via slack-based measures
In this paper, we propose the use of stochastic frontier models to impose theoretical regularity constraints (like monotonicity and concavity) on flexible functional forms. These constraints take the form of inequalities involving the data and the parameters of the model. We address a major concern when statistically endogenous variables are present in these inequalities. We present results with and without endogeneity in the inequality constrain…

Another Look at Regional Convergence in Greece
The present paper examines regional convergence in Greece using g - and † -convergence concepts as well as Markov chain analysis for a NUTS-3 classification. The g -concept indicates convergence at the rate 2% (1971-81) and 4% (1982-93). Markov chain analysis, however, provides strong evidence in favour of club formation, duality and polarization for Greek regions for the 1971-93 period. It also indicates the presence of structural change in the …
Regional Growth and Convergence: Evidence from the United States
TSIONAS E. G. (2000) Regional growth and convergence: evidence from the United States, Reg. Studies 34 , 231-238. The paper considers regional convergence in the US. Both g - and † -convergence tests indicate that in the period 1977-96 regional incomes do not converge, yet kernel density estimates of the distribution show some variation in the tail characteristics of the distribution. Using finite normal mixtures to examine time invariance of the…

Are Regional Incomes in the USA Converging? A Non-linear Perspective
Christopoulos D. K. and Tsionas E. G. (2007) Are regional incomes in the USA converging? A non-linear perspective, Regional Studies 41, 525–530. This article deviates from the current practice of regional convergence by allowing output convergence to follow a non-linear process. In this scenario all standard linear unit root tests have low power, thus frequently leading to misguided conclusions. In light of this a unit root test based on a non-li…

A Spatial Stochastic Frontier Model with Spillovers: Evidence for Italian Regions
Efficiency measurement using stochastic frontier models is well established in applied econometrics. However, no published work seems to be available on efficiency analysis using spatial data dealing with possible spatial dependence between regions. This article considers a stochastic frontier model with decomposition of inefficiency into an idiosyncratic and a spatial, spillover component. Exact posterior distributions of parameters are derived,…

Regional Convergence and Common, Stochastic Long-run Trends: A Re-examination of the US Regional Data
The paper utilizes modern econometric techniques organized around I(1) and cointegration analysis to examine the number of common, stochastic long-run trends in regional incomes and assess the hypothesis of regional convergence for the US over the period 1929‐1997. Time series evidence is conflicting but tends to indicate the presence of too many common, stochastic, long-run trends, thus providing no support for the convergence hypothesis. L'arti…

Electoral Motives, Partisan Motives and Dynamic Optimality With Many Taxes: An International Investigation
In this paper, we argue that tax‐smoothing results based on total tax revenues may be of limited importance if in fact governments are concerned with the inter‐temporal distortionary effects of many kinds of taxes, when electoral and partisan motives also have to be taken into account. We develop an inter‐temporal model that predicts that tax revenue mix should follow random walks. The model is tested with international data using both time serie…

This paper examines efficiency and growth patterns in the production of output and ideas in the United States. It employs frontier techniques and jointly estimates the production of output and the production of ideas. We find states to be particularly efficient in the use of their inputs in the production of output process, whereas there is more…
