Urban performance at different boundaries in England and Wales through the settlement scaling theory
The relationship between transport-led agglomeration and economic performance is evaluated in an English and Welsh context. We examine the effects of scale, i.e., inter- versus intra-city mobility infrastructure, on urban size–cost performance. An additional contribution of this paper lies in its use of power-law scaling models of urban systems, enabling an assessment of optimality in the trade-off between economic output and mobility costs accou…

EU Mainstreaming of the Information Society in Regional Development Policy
Information and communication technologies are seen as representing one of the most fundamental changes of our time, and from the perspective of the European Union the promotion of an information society provides enormous opportunities for all of the regions in Europe. The European Spatial Approach
This article presents a discussion about an emerging area of evaluation discourse, the ‘European spatial approach’. It examines the current policy framework at the European-wide level by exploring the alternative planning and public policy paradigms that underpin the case for rationality within this framework. By using such a theoretical review, the article seeks to argue that the current deployment of evaluation within strategic spatial policy a…
Urban Regeneration and Transport Investment
Transport infrastructure has played only a limited role in the evolution of urban policy in the United Kingdom. The scale of investment in a range of infrastructural projects in Sheffield allows for a detailed examination of the interrelationships between regeneration and transport expenditure. This research programme is, in particular, intended to identify within one urban conurbation the effects of infrastructure on planning and property, busin…
