Rural policy between exploration and exploitation
Rural territories in Europe face challenges of access to services, depopulation, and limited administrative capacity. Governments respond with national policies driven by a strong push for institutional innovation, redefining which territories count as marginal and rural and how the State organises its support. This article compares two policy responses: Italy's National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI) and France's Agenda Rural. Both policies add…
Small and medium-sized towns in Italy
Small and Medium-Sized Towns (SMSTs) represent crucial nodes in Italy's polycentric structure, housing approximately 26% of the national population. While other European countries have implemented specific policies for SMSTs, Italy lacks dedicated instruments. This study employs Said's framework of imaginative geographies to analyze how territorial representations influence policy formulation and implementation regarding Italian SMSTs. Through a …
Setting up a University City. Geographies of Exclusion in North Turin
Universities have progressively seen a change in their role as actors in the transformation of cities, with the growth of student populations and related studentification processes that are seen both as drivers of development and causes of negative externalities. What risks being overshadowed, however, is the complex array of interests and agencies that are involved. The aim of the article is, thus, to explore the production of geographies of exc…

Left behind places’
‘Left behind places’ has become the leitmotif of geographical inequalities since the 2008 crisis. Yet, the term’s origins, definition and implications are poorly specified and risk obscuring the differentiated problems and pathways of different kinds of areas. This paper explicates the geographical etymology and spatial imaginary of ‘left behind places’. It argues that the appellation and its spatial expression have modified how geographical ineq…
Mid-term radiological results of a cementless short humeral component in anatomical and reverse shoulder arthroplasty
Implantation of this particular short cementless humeral component at the time of TSA or RSA was associated with a low rate of adverse radiological findings on the humeral side at mid-term follow-up. Our data do not raise any concerns regarding the use of a short stem in TSA or RSA. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2019;101-B:610-614.
Spatial Trends of Towns in Europe
The paper contributes to the understanding of socio‐spatial trends and urban systems in Europe, with a specific focus on smaller settlements. First, a morphological delimitation of urban settlements as geographical base is used to identify the different settlement structures that characterise regions across Europe. Secondly, an analysis of population and GDP performances of NUTS 3 regions for the 29 countries of the European space (growth rates i…
Small and Medium‐Sized Towns in Europe
Despite that small and medium‐sized towns (SMSTs) have been, and continue to be, a central part of the history of Europe, these places have largely been neglected by urban research. The ESPON TOWN project, on which this Special Issue builds, sought to redress this neglect performing a comparative analysis of their position and role across Europe. In this introductory paper we discuss some of the theoretical and methodological challenges when it c…

The Social Construction of Planning Systems
This article reflects on a theoretical framework for the analysis of planning systems based on an institutionalist planning theory broadened with Jessop's strategic-relational approach. The aim is to explore the concept of the planning system with an actor—structure perspective so as to underline possible research consequences for analyses and comparisons of planning systems. The article highlights the interactions of actors and social institutio…
Territorial attractiveness in EU urban and spatial policy
The paper introduces the concept of territorial assets and discusses their role for regional development. Focusing on European societies and taking into account different strands of the literature on place and territorial capital, we argue that the endowment with – and mobilization of – such territorial assets could be seen as a key aspect of regional policy, producing changes in the attraction (and/or retention) of specific segments of populatio…
