Happy Where You Are? Exploring Migration Intentions and Subjective Well-being Through a Discrete Choice Experiment
Gender differences in the travel patterns of Chilean workers
Does labour market flexibility boost or discourage the economic business cycle
Does a higher cultural supply raise cultural consumption? The association between individual and city traits and cultural consumption in Chile
While cultural economics and urban economics literatures have well established that more able individuals tend to prefer mostly cities with a high level of cultural amenities and schooling is one of the main individual determinants of the cultural consumption, there is no empirical evidence on whether cities specialized in culture boost cultural consumption of their residents. This research takes a step back compared to most studies and directly …
The Impact of Bodyweight on Life Satisfaction among School-Aged Children
Schools, circumstances and inequality of opportunities in Chile
How does air pollution affect housing rental prices in Chile? An economic assessment of PM 2.5 concentration across Chilean communes
This paper addresses a serious environmental concern in Chile: PM 2.5 concentration, a health threat especially affecting the population living in the central and southern communes of Chile. Using housing data for 312 spatial units, along with interpolation techniques to predict air pollution for communes with missing information, we find that, on average, 1 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 produces a decrease of 4.1 per cent in housing rental prices. T…
The Double Burden of Being A Woman and Obese
This study analyzes the labor market dimension of a worldwide social concern: the growing level of obesity. Using detailed, individual information of Chilean workers, the study finds a strong evidence of a wage penalty for women as body size increases, whereas men seemingly enjoy a wage premium for being overweight. Several hypotheses are tested for explaining this finding and results suggest that the gender wage gap between obese and non-obese w…
Market versus public provision of local goods
Amenity Decomposition
It is well established in the literature that amenities are important in affecting regional patterns by influencing both workers' and firms' location decisions. Using the seminal contribution made by Beeson and Eberts, this study performs a wage change decomposition into amenity (workers) and productivity (firms) components. The results reveal that firms are more significant when explaining high average wage regions in Chile, since they derive mo…
Construction of a Spatial Housing Price Index by Estimating an Almost Ideal Demand System
The aim of this paper is to build, for the first time, a spatial housing price index for the Chilean communities. The first step is to recover hedonic prices of three housing attributes by estimating a mixed index model using a generalised method of moments ( GMM ) procedure. Second, a censored almost ideal demand system is estimated to build expenditures for every community and to compare them among different spatial units, while maintaining a c…
A Spatial Decomposition of Income Inequality in Chile
Paredes, D., Iturra, V. and Lufin, M. A spatial decomposition of income inequality in Chile, Regional Studies. Previous literature identifies the high and persistent income inequality of Chile, but the geographic heterogeneity of the inequality is still unexplored. This lack of discussion encourages spatially blind policy that ignores the interaction between individual and spatial inequality. To evaluate its magnitude, a spatial decomposition at …
Substitution bias and the construction of a spatial cost of living index
