The Adjustment of Labor Markets to Robots
We use detailed administrative data to study the adjustment of local labor markets to industrial robots in Germany. Robot exposure, as predicted by a shift-share variable, is associated with displacement effects in manufacturing, but those are fully offset by new jobs in services. The incidence mostly falls on young workers just entering the labor force. Automation is related to more stable employment within firms for incumbents, and this is driv…
Adjusting to Globalization in Germany
We study the impact of trade exposure on the job biographies of 2.4 million manufacturing workers in Germany. Rising export opportunities lead to two equally important sources of earnings gains: on the job and employer switches within the same industry. Highly skilled workers benefit the most. Import shocks mostly hurt low-skilled workers, especially when they possess lots of industry-specific human capital. They also destroy workers’ rents when …
The future of coal in a carbon-constrained climate
Phasing out coal requires expanding the notion of a ‘just transition’ and a roadmap that specifies the sequence of coal plant retirement, the appropriate policy instruments as well as ways to include key stakeholders in the process

Globalization and local profiles of economic growth and industrial change
The aggregate German economy is characterized by a secular decline of manufacturing and a rise of modern service industries. This trend of structural change is not uniform across space, however. Some regions exhibit it at an accelerated pace, while other regions reinforced their manufacturing specializations. We first categorize all German regions into one of three groups, with ‘pro-trend’, ‘anti-trend’ or ‘featureless’ growth and provide a detai…
The Rise of the East and the Far East: German Labor Markets and Trade Integration
We analyze the effects of the unprecedented rise in trade between Germany and “the East” (China and Eastern Europe) in the period 1988–2008 on German local labor markets. Using detailed administrative data, we exploit the cross-regional variation in initial industry structures and use trade flows of other high-income countries as instruments for regional import and export exposure. We find that the rise of the East in the world economy caused sub…
Cultural Diversity and Local Labour Markets
Suedekum J., Wolf K. and Blien U. Cultural diversity and local labour markets, Regional Studies. The diversity of nationalities of foreign workers in the German labour market has increased considerably over the period 1995–2006. This paper investigates the effects of this diversity for native employees at the local level. The higher is high-skilled foreign employment, the higher are local wages and employment levels for natives. These effects are…
The size distribution across all cities – Double Pareto lognormal strikes
Human Capital Externalities and the Urban Wage Premium
In this paper, a survey is presented of the recent developments in two empirical literatures at the crossroads of labour and urban economics: studies about localised human capital externalities (HCE) and about the urban wage premium (UWP). After surveying the methods and main results of each of these two literatures separately, several interrelations between them are highlighted. In particular, the discussion focuses on whether HCE can be interpr…

Concentration and Specialization Trends in Germany since Re-unification
Suedekum J. (2006) Concentration and specialization trends in Germany since re-unification, Regional Studies 40, 861–873. This paper describes the development of regional specialization and geographical concentration in Germany from 1993 to 2001. It finds compelling evidence neither for a specialization process of German regions, nor for a concentration process of industries. This conclusion holds by and large for all levels of territorial aggreg…
