  • Molecular tools for bathing water assessment in Europe

    Open Access•David M Oliver, Nick Hanley et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2016•References: 38

The use of molecular tools, principally qPCR, versus traditional culture-based methods for quantifying microbial parameters (e.g., Fecal Indicator Organisms) in bathing waters generates considerable ongoing debate at the science-policy interface. Advances in science have allowed the development and application of molecular biological methods for rapid (~2 h) quantification of microbial pollution in bathing and recreational waters. In contrast, cu…

Open Access•R S De Groot, Rudolf De Groot et al.•ARTICLE•Ecosystem Services•2012

This paper gives an overview of the value of ecosystem services of 10 main biomes expressed in monetary units. In total, over 320 publications were screened covering over 300 case study locations. Approximately 1350 value estimates were coded and stored in a searchable Ecosystem Service Value Database (ESVD). A selection of 665 value estimates was used for the analysis. Acknowledging the uncertainties and contextual nature of any valuation, the a…

Alistair McVittie, Dominic Moran et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 1

McVittie A., Moran D. and Elston D. Public preferences for rural policy reform: evidence from Scottish surveys, Regional Studies. Agricultural reform across the European Union has focused debate on how agriculture delivers wider rural objectives. The authors undertook economic valuation and multicriteria studies to explore public preferences for rural policy. The results suggest simultaneous preferences for both environmental and social benefits,…
