  • The perceived impact of immigration on native workers’ labour market outcomes

Open Access•Bernd Hayo, Duncan Roth et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2024

A sizeable literature analyses how immigration affects attitudes towards migrants and discusses differences between socio-economic groups and their potential correlation with perceived concerns about labour market competition. Against the background of the large-scale influx of refugees into Germany between 2015 and 2016, this paper uses data from a unique and representative survey of the German population to assess whether respondents express fe…

  • Dynamic agglomeration effects of foreigners and natives – The role of experience in high-quality sectors, tasks and establishments

Open Access•Annekatrin Niebuhr, Jan Cornelius Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Science and Urban…•2024

We analyze whether the benefits of work experience that was acquired in denser locations can be explained by the quality of jobs that can be found in agglomerations using administrative data on individual employment biographies of workers in Germany. We find that 79% of the premium for work experience gained in the densest regions can be ascribed to the sectors, tasks and establishments in which experience was acquired. Moreover, we find that for…

  • How does the Covid‐19 pandemic affect regional labor markets and why do large cities suffer most

Open Access•Silke Hamann, Annekatrin Niebuhr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2023

We estimate the spatially heterogeneous effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on labor market dynamics in Germany until December 2021. While initially slightly stronger in rural regions and large agglomerations, adverse effects quickly become more pronounced and persistent in large agglomerations compared to all other region types. We ascribe the larger impact of the pandemic in large agglomerations to two factors. First, a combination…

  • Internal migration dynamics of native and foreign workers

Open Access•Masood Gheasi, Bo Pieter Johannes Andrée et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

Why are certain labour markets more resilient to economic shocks? Why are some economies deeply affected by migration? Modern migration theory remains based on simplistic neo-classical utility maximizing assumptions, despite a failure to fully answer real-world migration questions. The aim of this paper is to show that neo-classical dynamics are differentiated between subpopulations that make up the workforce. Using disaggregated data from German…

  • Establishments in the Covid-19-Crisis (BeCovid)

Lutz Bellmann, Patrick Gleiser et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2022

The high-frequency establishment survey “Establishments in the Covid-19-Crisis” (BeCovid) started in 2020 and continued until June 2022 to collect monthly data on how businesses in Germany adjusted to the challenges of the pandemic. This article describes the survey design and provides an overview over the topics covered. We further outline the survey’s research potentials, particularly when linked to administrative records

  • Dynamics of intra-urban employment geographies

    Open Access•Bastian Heider, J Mast et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 13

In this paper we analyze changes in the intra-urban spatial distribution of employment across six U.S. and German city regions between 2002 and 2015. Our methodological approach allows for a systematic and spatially consistent comparison of urban spatial structures across the two different countries. The empirical results show major national, regional, and sectoral differences in the spatial distribution of employment. In the German case studies …
