Regional development and global production networks: The case of the semiconductor industry in Wales
This article explores the interface between global production networks and regional economic development. The case study focuses on the semiconductor industry in Wales where multinational enterprises are, with regional institutions, developing deeper forms of regional embeddedness. Although these firms boost the Welsh and UK economies through wage, export and knowledge effects, their scope to support more fundamental regional development is const…
The transformative potential of inward investment on industrial cluster development: The case of the semiconductor industry in Wales
This paper examines the transformative potential of inward investment on cluster development. Exploring a low SME equity equilibrium in Wales
Previous research has examined geographical variations in SME access to external finance, especially bank loans. Rather less attention has been paid to how far SME equity access difficulties in more peripheral regions, and cities within these regions, is a demand or supply side issue, and how far equity investments are concentrated in specific urban areas in peripheral regions. This paper examines these topics through an analysis of small firm eq…

Assessing the Environmental Consequences of Major Sporting Events: The 2003/04 FA Cup Final
Policy-makers are increasingly interested in the wider ramifications of sporting events, including the environmental impacts of event visitation. This paper demonstrates how two separate though related methodologies were used to inform conclusions on the economic and environmental impacts related to event visitation. The approaches used to assess the case event were environmental input-output tables and ecological footprint analysis. Combining th…

Assessing industry linkages using regional input–output tables
Midmore P., Munday M. and Roberts A. (2006) Assessing industry linkages using regional Input–Output tables, Regional Studies 40, 329–343. The regional policy literature has shown renewed interest in the promotion of industries with the potential to embed themselves into regional economies. Unfortunately, analysis of sectors within strategy-led documents often fails to tie the identification of key industries to any specific methodology. The paper…

Regional Tourism Satellite Accounts: A Useful Policy Tool
Tourism increasingly features in strategic regional policy documents, being considered important to regional economic prospects. Consequently many regions, notably those less prosperous, have expended significant resources in developing tourism attractions, promoting tourism events and supporting tourism-based operations. In this resource context, the difficulties in assessing the economic contribution of this diverse (and often atomised) set of …

Conclusions, placed in the context of economic development needs in Wales, assess a future research agenda for measuring the effectiveness of regional policy
Assessing the Regional Transactions of Foreign Manufacturers in Wales: Issues and Determinants
This paper examines the determinants of foreign manufacturing regional transactions using data derived from an expenditure survey in Wales. The paper assesses the significance of various factors including subsidiary age and plant size, as well as specific industry influences, and explores the dynamics of local purchasing propensities through time. The paper also considers the role of buyer‐supplier partnerships in productivity spillovers at the r…
