Estimating National and Foreign Trade Elasticities Using Generalized Transport Costs
We introduce the definition of two distinct trade elasticities corresponding to imports from regions located in the same country (national elasticities) and foreign regions located in other countries (foreign elasticities). We resort to a three‐tier nested CES utility structure to derive the corresponding demand gravity equations. In absence of tariffs within single markets, we identify and recover the elasticities through a precise measure of ge…

Trade spillover effects of transport infrastructure investments: A structural gravity analysis for EU regions
A structural gravity model is used to estimate the regional trade and welfare effects of the reduction in transport costs between and within European Union regions induced by European Union Cohesion Policy road infrastructure investment. The results imply that, in targeted regions, the policy increases interregional real exports by 0.03% and real gross domestic product (GDP) by 0.15% on average. The gains in real GDP are the highest in the region…
The ripple effects of large‐scale transport infrastructure investment
We analyze the general equilibrium effects of an asymmetric decrease in transport costs, combining a large‐scale spatial dynamic general equilibrium model for 267 European NUTS‐2 regions with a detailed transport model at the level of individual road segments. As a case study, we consider the impact of the road infrastructure investments in Central and Eastern Europe of the European Cohesion Policy. Our analysis suggests that the decrease in tran…
Of losers and laggards: The interplay of material conditions and individual perceptions in the shaping of EU discontent
Two principal strands of scholarship analyse the material roots of European Union (EU) discontent. Some focus on the effects of regional decline, while others examine the role of individual socioeconomic factors. This paper brings these two perspectives together. We argue that EU discontent is a multifaceted phenomenon structured by the spatially-rooted interplay between individual and regional material conditions and subjective perceptions. We a…
Does decentralization of governance promote urban diversity? Evidence from Spain
The worldwide trend to decentralize the responsibilities and budgets of governments impacts regional economies in various ways. We use the example of Spain to test empirically whether the decentralization of governance is an important determinant of the sectoral composition of cities in an urban system. Our regression results, exploiting unique firm-level and time-varying transport-cost data, support the hypothesis that governance decentralizatio…
A trade hierarchy of cities based on transport cost thresholds
Empirical evidence has been lacking to explain trade agglomerations within countries. Starting with a novel micro-database of road freight shipments between Spanish municipalities for the period 2003–07, we break down city (municipal) trade flows into the extensive and intensive margins and assess trade frictions and trade concentration relying on a unique generalized transport cost measure and three internal borders: NUTS-5 (municipal), NUTS-3 (…
