Building geodemographic regions
We develop and apply a novel geodemographic classification of commuting flows to delineate 486 functional labour market areas (LMAs) across six commuter groups in England and Wales. Framed by the north-south divide, we then use settlement scaling to examine how economic and infrastructural agglomeration influence productivity, using the geodemographic LMAs as our base units. We find that disparities in mobility and infrastructure contribute to sp…
Engaging in critical consciousness in social work education
Engaging in critical consciousness has been central for anti-oppressive practice in social work education. This article presents reflections on migration and (anti-) oppressive social work practices based on a student-academic activist project beginning in the North-East (NE) of England. The project involved MA social work students and two academics from a NE university, organizing a series of events aimed at raising awareness in relation to the …
‘Becoming’ and ‘Being’ a student
Based on a PhD study, this article explores the experiences of students living in Cumbria and North East England who were undertaking one of two work-based learning social work degrees, one at a local face-to-face university the other at a national distance learning university. Whilst there is a long history of universities in England providing work-based learning routes in social work education, 2010 witnessed a revitalisation with the introduct…
‘I think it’s made me a different social worker now’
There has been an international drive to ensure social work students are research-minded. However, little is known about their experiences of undertaking independent research and even less is known about whether and how they go on to apply research skills in practice. This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study which investigated the experiences of 22 postgraduate students who were studying at a university in the North East of England…
Teaching Partnership Four Years on
The North-East Social Work Alliance was formed in 2016 following a successful application for Government funding in the second wave of Teaching Partnerships. The formation of this Teaching Partnership enabled the development of new and innovative ways of working between higher education institutions and their partner agencies. Four years on this has resulted in a complex network of relationships combining well established existing partnerships wi…
Regions from the ground up
In this paper, we consider the question of what is ‘in’ a region, from an economic perspective, based on commuting data. This follows a long line of studies on labour market delineation, including the widely used ‘travel-to-work area’ approach. Using Combo, a network partitioning algorithm, we analyse commuting data from the 2011 UK Census in order to define a discrete set of regions. Our aim is twofold: to contribute to methodological advances i…
