  • Universal Cash Transfers and Labor Market Outcomes

Open Access•Andrew J Bibler, Andrew Bibler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 2

One major criticism of Universal Basic Income is that unconditional cash transfers discourage recipients from working. Evidence to date has largely relied on targeted and/or conditional transfer programs. However, it is difficult to draw conclusions from such programs because universal transfers may induce a positive demand shock by distributing cash to a large portion of the population, which may in turn offset any negative labor supply response…

  • Universal Cash and Crime

Open Access•Brett Watson, Mouhcine Guettabi et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2020

We estimate the effects of universal cash transfers on crime from Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend, an annual lump-sum payment to all Alaska residents. We find a 14% increase in substance-abuse incidents the day after the payment and a 10% increase over the following four weeks. This is partially offset by an 8% decrease in property crime, with no changes in violent crimes. On an annual basis, however, changes in criminal activity from the paymen…

  • Stand Your Ground laws, homicides and gun deaths

    Mouhcine Guettabi, Abdul Munasib•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 4

An increased recognition of the possibility of treatment heterogeneities of policy changes has resulted in the rise of comparative case studies. Our analysis uses the synthetic control method (SCM) to examine if the passage of the Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws had dissimilar effects on homicides and firearms deaths in the US states that passed these laws during the first wave (between 2005 and 2007). Using 22 years of data (1991–2012) to study eac…

  • Evaluating Potential Economic Effects of an Industrial Road on Subsistence in North-Central Alaska

Open Access•Mouhcine Guettabi, Joshua Greenberg et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2016

North-central Alaska is one of largest inhabited, roadless areas in North America and, indeed, the world. Access, via a new road, to the Ambler mining district of north-central Alaska has been proposed. To evaluate how new road access might affect subsistence harvest, we used zero inflated negative binomial models to identify factors related to subsistence production at the household level. We found substantial differences in these factors betwee…
