Urban Housing Markets and Sustainability Risk
Despite the global shift toward sustainability and rising expectations for socially and environmentally responsible housing, evidence from South Africa's urban markets remains limited and underexplored. This study examines how sustainability‐related vulnerabilities shape downside housing risk across 60 cities between 2002 and 2021. We construct a sustainability risk index using an entropy‐weighted spatial framework that combines social vulnerabil…
The relationship between fiscal federalism and fiscal discipline
In recent times, a strand of macro-stabilization experts has been expressing great concern about the move towards fiscal federalism being embraced by many countries over the past three decades. They argue that it could endanger fiscal discipline because it is incompatible with prudent fiscal management. However, some other experts disagree and believe the impact on fiscal discipline could be positive. But, despite the lack of unanimity in the the…
Demographic change and wealth inequality
This study explores the effect of various demographic features on wealth share using yearly data for 43 countries. Empirical results from quantile regressions indicate that besides macroeconomic and institutional factors, population ageing and the high size of working population exhibit some mitigating effects on wealth inequality at lower quantiles and the opposite effect at high quantiles. Whereas at the quantile above 75, rising share of worki…
Regional heterogeneities in returns to education in Zambia
Purpose This study determines the existence of regional heterogeneities in returns to education in Zambia. It seeks to analyse the differential impact of education on wages across different geographical regions of Zambia. Adopting a regional approach, the study employs novel empirical methods to understand the pecuniary benefits of education at the sub-national level. Design/methodology/approach The study analyses data from Zambia’s 2021 Labour F…
Fuel for regional income inequality in South Africa
This paper analyses the effect of fiscal redistribution on regional income inequality in South Africa using the spatial models. Yearly provincial-level data on different spending categories are considered for the period from 2014 to 2018. The study uses various spatial panel specifications to control for both spatial dependence and heterogeneity among provinces. When factor incomes and market prices are controlled for, empirical results indicate …

Exchange Rate Pass-through to Producer Prices in South Africa
This paper investigates the exchange rate pass-through to producer prices in South African industries from 1970 to 2016. Empirical results from panel contemporaneous techniques indicate that exchange rate pass-through to South African producer prices is contingent on the currency choice with substantial variations across industries. Particularly, Rand variations with the currency of Germany, Japan, and the US pose greater influence on the produce…

Mixed-gender ownership and financial performance of SMEs in South Africa
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the presence of women among owner-stakeholders affects firms’ financial performance. Particularly, it extends the corporate governance literature by linking stakeholder theory and gender differences to explain why gender composition of ownership matters for firms’ performance. As the management of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) revolves around owner-managers and their individu…
Causal Relationship between Asset Prices and Output in the United States
Emirmahmutoglu F., Balcilar M., Apergis N., Simo-Kengne B. D., Chang T. and Gupta R. Causal relationship between asset prices and output in the United States: evidence from the state-level panel Granger causality test, Regional Studies. This paper investigates the causal relationship between asset prices and output across US states using a bootstrap panel Granger causality approach which allows not only for heterogeneity and cross-sectional depen…
The Impact of House Prices on Consumption in South Africa
This paper provides an empirical analysis of the role of house prices in determining the dynamic behaviour of consumption in South Africa using a panel vector autoregression approach to provincial level panel data covering the period of 1996–2010. With the shocks being identified using the standard recursive identification scheme, we find that the response of consumption to house prices shock is positive, but short-lived. In addition, we find tha…
