Regional human capital and knowledge diffusion in Poland
This paper studies the role of the structure of varieties disaggregated into the related (RV) and unrelated (UV) variety on the rate of technological progress. In particular, we modify the theoretical framework proposed by replacing human capital with a variable that describes its interaction with RV and UV. Then, we validate hypotheses derived from this modified framework using the two-step system GMM estimation method and panel data on NUTS2 re…
Regional income convergence in Visegrad-4 countries
In this paper we study regional income per capita convergence in Visegrad-4 countries using the novel approach proposed by Phillips and Sul (2007a) that has not been so far employed in the context of their regions. Our study employs data at the NUTS-3 regional classification for the period 1993-2023. Our results indicate that the income convergence hypothesis among all Visegrad-4 regions is rejected both for the whole region and particular countr…
Two faces’ of human capital and research and development activities
In this article, we study the role of technological relatedness/unrelatedness in explaining the relationship between research and development and human capital and total factor productivity growth at the regional level using system Generalized Method of Moments and statistical data for 16 Polish regions over the period 2003–2019. Using the research and development effects-based approach, we weight the number of patents relative to the employed in…
Related and unrelated variety and convergence to technological frontier
This paper examines the effects of related and unrelated variety on total factor productivity (TFP) in Poland. Based on dynamic panel data regression results for Polish regions in 2003-2019, we find the positive effect of related variety and the strong negative effect of unrelated variety on TFP. This implies that regions with high related and low unrelated variety optimize TFP. Using the estimated TFP values, we tested for TFP convergence to the…
Institutional quality, the level of development and Japanese outward foreign direct investment
Uncertainty and long-run economy
In this paper, we study the effects of macroeconomic uncertainty shocks on the US economy in the long-run using an IV-SVAR methodology for the period 1960–2019. Following Piffer and Podstawski (Econ J 128(616):3266–3284, 2018), we use variation in gold prices as an instrument to identify the uncertainty shocks. We find that potential output decreases persistently in response to an uncertainty shock. Furthermore, our study shows that decline in th…
Institutional quality and inward FDI
This paper studies the determinants of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) across the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) countries between 2009 and 2017 using a modified knowledge-capital model of the multinational firm. In particular, we investigate the importance of institutional quality factors. We document the significant effects of institutional characteristics such as government effectiveness, control of corruption, political stability and r…
Trade policies in Central Asia after Eaeu enlargement and after Russian WTO accession
This paper revisits the question of choice between regionalism and multilateralism in trade relations of Central Asia introduced by Pomfret (Citation2005). Our study is motivated by a significant restoration of economic links between the former Soviet republics following Russian accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the formation of new trade ties with Vietnam, Iran, and Serbia. A…
Between the Eurozone crisis and the Brexit
This paper investigates the determinants of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) of British multinational firms in the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association members across 2009–2019 using Bayesian model averaging. We find evidence that supports the existence and dynamic behavior of the East–West structure of FDI between three groups of countries: core-EU, Central and Eastern European economies (CEE), and the Nordics. Fur…
The role of global value chain participation in geographic concentration by export destinations
This study empirically investigates the nexus between global value chain participation and geographic concentration by export destinations. We follow the recent theoretical framework of Antras and Gortari (2020) and Pflüger and Tabuchi (2019), which allows us to determine a link between global value chain participation and geographic concentration by export destinations with trade cost reduction and dispersive effect in the global value chains. U…
Determinants of foreign direct investment from Europe to Asia
This study examines the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Europe to Asia based on the knowledge‐capital model. The data include 38 European countries and 24 host Asian countries over the period 1995–2013. Empirical evidence from Poisson‐pseudo maximum likelihood estimation method is in line with hypothesised predictions derived from the knowledge‐capital model. In particular, the total income and the similarity in market size b…
Brexit and the location of Japanese direct investment in European regions
This paper investigates how the Brexit announcement affects Japanese direct investment into Europe at the regional NUTS-2 level. Political and economic uncertainty is an important factor affecting the economic performance of a country and its regions. In this study, Japanese annual firm-level data between the years 2000 and 2018 for 31 European countries is used. Negative binomial estimations indicate a significant negative relationship between u…
Firm-level determinants of direct and indirect exports
In this paper, we study the determinants of the direct and indirect export performance of firms in Central and Eastern European (C.E.E.) and Middle Eastern and North African (M.E.N.A.) countries, both jointly and separately. In particular, we address three research questions: (i) Do the firms that export indirectly display the same characteristics as those that directly export their products?; (ii) Is the role of innovation, research and developm…
Corruption, Privatisation and Economic Growth in Post-communist Countries
This article empirically investigates the effects of corruption and privatisation on economic growth in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former USSR. We use a corruption and privatisation augmented open-economy leader–follower endogenous growth model to derive our research hypotheses. In this setting, corruption, privatisation and external openness jointly determine the per capita income in the follower economy. …
Determinants of City Choice of Foreign Direct Investment into China
In this paper we study empirically the determinants of location of inward FDI in China at the city level using firm‐level data for the period 1999–2009. In particular, we focus on the role of specialisation, diversification and competition externalities having controlled for the extensive set of city and regional characteristics including the regional market potential. We estimate both the conditional and multinomial logit models. We find that ag…

European Integration and Spatial Wage Structure in Poland
In this paper we examine the relationship between average wages and market potential across Polish 16 NUTS 2 administrative units during the 1995–2009 period to study the effects of increased international market access using the new economic geography approach. In particular, we estimate the relationship between average regional wages and the market‐potential function derived from the modified Helpman‐Hanson theoretical model. We demonstrate tha…
Globalization and Human Development in Post-Transition Countries
In this paper we investigate empirically the relationship between globalization and human development in post-transition countries using annual panel data for the 1971-2010 period. We show that there exists a positive and statistically significant relationship between globalization and human development in the case of unconditional regressions. This relationship remains positive and significant once the process of European and regional integratio…
Determinants of the Location of Foreign Firms in P olish Regions
The goal of this paper is to study empirically the determinants of foreign firms' location in P olish regions with a special focus on the role of firm size. To derive testable hypotheses on the firm location choice an analytical framework that combines the firm heterogeneity and the new economic geography literatures is used. In this framework, agglomeration economies, technical infrastructure, and labour market characteristics may affect locatio…
Location of Foreign Firms and National Border Effects
This paper investigates the importance of border effects for the location of foreign firms within Poland using a regional data set for the 1990s. In contrast to previous studies the border effects are estimated for individual neighbouring countries that belong to two groups: EU member countries and EU non-accessing countries. It is shown that border dummies for three EU non-accessing countries: Belarus, Russia and Ukraine are negative and statist…
Telecommunications Infrastructure and Regional Economic Development
Cieślik A. and Kaniewska M. (2004) Telecommunications infrastructure and regional economic development: the case of Poland, Regional Studies38, 713-725. We develop a theoretical model that establishes a link between telecommunications infrastructure and the regional level of income. This relationship is subsequently tested using Polish regional panel data for the 1990s. The empirical results confirm that there exists a positive and statistically …
