  • Autobahns and jobs: A regional study using historical instrumental variables

    Open Access•Joachim Möller, Marcus Zierer•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Economics•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 22

This paper analyzes the impact of investments in the German autobahn network on West German regions’ labor market performance. To address problems of endogeneity and reverse causation, we use historical instrumental variables from an 1890 plan for the railroad network and a 1937 plan for the autobahn and major roads network. We find a statistically and economically significant positive causal effect of regional changes in autobahn kilometers on e…

  • Lohnungleichheit – Gibt es eine Trendwende?

    Open Access•Joachim Möller•ARTICLE•Wirtschaftsdienst•2016

Using a large panel microdata set for the time period 1992 to 2014, the paper analyses the long-run trends in German wage inequality for full-time workers. The approach differentiates by gender and region. The analysis confirms the result of other studies that show a sharp increase in wage inequality in Germany from the mid-1990s until 2010. The increase can only partly be explained by rising skill differentials. The lion’s share is neither attri…

  • Is There a Gap in the Gap? Regional Differences in the Gender Pay Gap

Open Access•Bertrand Hirsch, Marion König et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 5

In this paper, we investigate regional differences in the gender pay gap both theoretically and empirically. Within a spatial model of monopsonistic competition, we show that more densely populated labour markets are more competitive and constrain employers’ ability to discriminate against women. Utilizing a large administrative data set for western Germany and a flexible semi‐parametric propensity score matching approach, we find that the unexpl…

  • The Creative Class, Bohemians and Local Labor Market Performance: A Micro-data Panel Study for Germany 1975–2004

Joachim Möller, Annie Tubadji•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2009

The paper aims at testing Florida’s concept of the Creative Class using panel data for 323West German regions for the time period 1975-2004. Applying a dynamic system approach based on GMM, we find that the local concentration of the Creative Class has predictive power for the economic development of a region and tends to outperform traditional indicators of human capital. However, our results do not support Florida’s assertion that the creative …

  • Group-specific Effects of Inter‐regional Mobility on Earnings – A Microdata Analysis for Germany

    Florian Lehmer, Joachim Möller•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Lehmer F. and Möller J. Group-specific effects of inter-regional mobility on earnings – a microdata analysis for Germany, Regional Studies. The paper analyses the relationship between regional mobility and earnings for different groups of workers. Using a large panel microdata set the authors find negative earnings differentials of movers in the year before migration and strong evidence for significant wage gains through mobility. A decomposition…
