Linking the first, second and third IEA science studies
International comparative assessments are crucial for examining country-level educational changes over time, but requires a comparable achievement scale. This study develops a unified science achievement scale that links the First and Second International Science Studies with the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study for upper primary school students. The science measures in each study are analyzed with respect to construct consis…
Repeated mistakes in app-based language learning
Over the past decade, there has been an enormous upsurge in the use of educational apps in primary schools. However, few studies have examined how children interact with these apps and how their interaction patterns relate to learning outcomes. An interaction pattern that is potentially detrimental to learning is repeated mistakes, defined as making the same mistake more than once when answering a task. With interaction data from an eight-week di…
Assessing social competence and antisocial behaviors in children
The results indicate that the HCSBS is a reliable measurement instrument although there is still a potential for improvement by revising some of the items
Dimensionality of Morphological Knowledge—Evidence from Norwegian Third Graders
This study aimed to determine the dimensionality of morphological knowledge by examining different sources of variance. According to the Morphological Pathways Framework ( Levesque et al., Journal of Research in Reading, 44, 10–26, 2021 ), morphological awareness, morphological analysis and morphological decoding are related, but distinct dimensions of morphological knowledge. However, multidimensionality might also stem from construct‐irrelevant…
Linking the Scores of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment 5-min and the interRAI Cognitive Performance Scale in Older Adults With Mild Physical or Cognitive Impairment
Background: Bridging scores generated from different cognitive assessment tools is necessary to efficiently track changes in cognition across the continuum of care. This study linked scores from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment-5 min (MoCA 5-min) to the interRAI cognitive Performance Scale (CPS), commonly adopted tools in clinical and long-term care settings, respectively. Methods: We included individual-level data from persons who participated …
O-GlcNAc cycling mediates energy balance by regulating caloric memory
Caloric need has long been thought a major driver of appetite. However, it is unclear whether caloric need regulates appetite in environments offered by many societies today where there is no shortage of food. Here we observed that wildtype mice with free access to food did not match calorie intake to calorie expenditure. While the size of a meal affected subsequent intake, there was no compensation for earlier under- or over-consumption. To test…
Large Sample Confidence Intervals for Item Response Theory Reliability Coefficients
In applications of item response theory (IRT), an estimate of the reliability of the ability estimates or sum scores is often reported. However, analytical expressions for the standard errors of the estimators of the reliability coefficients are not available in the literature and therefore the variability associated with the estimated reliability is typically not reported. In this study, the asymptotic variances of the IRT marginal and test reli…
Finding ways to the hard to reach—considerations on the content and concept of outreach work
In this article central elements and characteristics of outreach work are discussed. The empirical basis is documentation from five research circles conducted in Sweden, where outreach workers participated and put their work experiences into words. The findings from the circles are weighed against accounts from detached youth workers and it is argued that there are common methodological key components in outreach work that can be identified throu…
Macrophyte Development and Habitat Characteristics in Sweden's Large Lakes
The four largest Swedish lakes, Vänern, Vättern, Hjälmaren, and Mälaren, were surveyed by means of aerial IR-color photography in the 1970s. Along small slope gradients in all lakes the emergent communities extended to a width of hundreds of meters, while the extent on steeper slopes was a few meters. Because of the fractionate shape, L. Mälaren has a very long shoreline, which promotes vegetation growth in the transition zone between land and wa…
The Environmental Consequences of Alien Species in the Swedish Lakes Mälaren, Hjälmaren, Vänern and Vättern
Twenty alien species have become established in the lakes Mälaren, Vänern, Vättern and Hjälmaren. Intentional introductions include fish and the signal crayfish from North America, ornamental plants, and the Canada goose. Unintentional introductions include the crayfish plague introduced with infected crayfish, the zebra mussel, and Chinese mitten crab introduced with ballast water. The introduction of pathogens and parasites, in particular the c…
Scandinavian Evidence on Growth and Age Structure
The age distribution is seldom taken into consideration in macroeconometric papers in spite of the fact that established economic theories predict that demographic factors will affect the aggregate economy. This paper investigates empirically the influence of age variables on growth. Unlike recent papers on the subject, the focus here is on investigating the relationship on annual data for individual Scandinavian countries. Estimations of a typic…
