Rethinking clusters and the paradox of sustainability innovation
This Special Issue reports findings from the ‘Rethinking Clusters’ conference held in Valencia in the latter part of November 2023. At the time no-one dreamt that an important part of its thematic – sustainability – in the context of innovation would, within a year, loom so fatally large by the experience of global heating in the form of catastrophic floods which so badly affected the lives of communities in the wider Valencia city and region at …
Born to innovate, not to produce
This paper examines the role of innovation in Marshallian Industrial Districts (MIDs) in Spain and Italy over three decades. Challenging traditional views that focus on production as the primary driver of success, the paper argues that MIDs function as ‘living innovation machines’, where continuous technological advancement ensures long-term competitiveness. Using a comparative causal framework and a dataset covering 1991–2018, the study assesses…
Artificial intelligence, big data, algorithms and Industry 4.0 in firms and clusters
This collection on ‘Artificial intelligence, big data, algorithms and Industry 4.0 in firms and clusters’ is introduced exploring the themes discussed by the nine papers and grouped into three categories to uncover new dynamics and identify future research opportunities for clusters and organizations in these transformative times. The first group explores theoretical aspects of AI and its evolution in social sciences, focusing on industry 4.0, sm…
Living innovation machines
This paper investigates the innovative intensity (iMID effect) in the local production systems (LPSs) using dynamic territorial units that modifies their geographical boundaries and specialization over time. The paper is based on the idea that the local communities are the real unit of generation of innovation and that they are constantly changing, behaving like a ‘living innovation machine’. To explore this dynamic relationship, the paper applie…
Predicting Volunteers’ Decisions to Stay in or Quit an NGO Using Neural Networks
This paper uses non-traditional approaches to predict why volunteers remain in or quit a non-governmental organisation position. A questionnaire featuring 55 predictors was conducted via an online survey mechanism from March to May 2021. A total of 250 responses were received. The subsequent data analysis compared logistic regression and artificial neural network results, using machine-learning interpreters to explain the features which determine…
The impact of cultural and creative industries on the wealth of countries, regions and municipalities
This paper compares the total impact of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) on per capita income of countries, regions and municipalities. We estimate the total effects of CCIs in 78 developed and developing countries in 5 continents, in 275 European regions and in 518 municipalities in the European region of Valencia, using data obtained from multiple databases and nonparametric local linear least squares. The average effects of CCIs are pos…
Understanding innovation in creative industries
This paper studies innovation in the creative industry of art restoration, which is characterised by an intensive use of symbolic knowledge. Using the resource-based view of the firm as a theoretical framework, this study adapts Community Innovation Survey (CIS) methodology to this industry, creating and exploiting a unique dataset from the restoration departments of museums in 43 countries on 5 continents. The results suggest that the type and c…

Territorial servitization in Marshallian industrial districts
This paper is the first general study of territorial servitization in Marshallian industrial districts (MIDs). It introduces the novel idea of place-based servitization as a form of territorial servitization, which is then used conceptually to reframe the traditional perspective on MIDs, manufacturing places par excellence. Drawing on comparable quantitative data from Italy and Spain for 1991, 2001 and 2011, the paper then provides generalizable …

Comparing creative industries in Europe
Creative industries are increasingly understood to contribute to localised innovation and dynamism. This paper provides a methodologically consistent comparison of creative industries across France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain. We map spatial agglomerations of creative activities showing evidence of urban concentration, which for Britain and France coincides with the dominance of capital cities, whilst for Spain and Italy, significant concentr…

Reasons for Clustering of Creative Industries in Italy and Spain
Creative industries and creative employment tend to concentrate around medium and large cities, forming creative local systems. We follow a multidisciplinary approach, based on cultural and creative economics, evolutionary geography and urban economics, in order to analyse the forces behind the clustering of employment in creative industries in a comparative analysis of Italy and Spain. The results show different patterns of clustering of creativ…
The Importance of Creative Industry Agglomerations in Explaining the Wealth of European Regions
This is an author's accepted manuscript of an article published in: \n“European Planning Studies"; Volume 20, Issue 8, 2012; copyright Taylor & Francis; available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09654313.2012.680579
Do Creative Industries Cluster? Mapping Creative Local Production Systems in Italy and Spain
An important debate on the role of creativity and culture as factors in local economic development is distinctly emerging. Despite the emphasis put on the theoretical definition of these concepts, it is necessary to strengthen comparative research for the identification and analysis of the kind of creativity embedded in a given territory. Creative local production systems are identified, in Italy and Spain, that depart from local labour markets a…
Innovation and Industrial Districts
n We analyse an exhaustive database of patents granted in Spain between 2001 and 2006 aggregated in a panel of 806 local labour markets classified by seven typologies of local production systems. Our analysis shows that Marshallian industrial districts generate 30% of Spanish patents and an innovative output per capita that is 47% above the national average and 31% larger than the manufacturing production systems of large firms. The econometric e…
Knowledge Externalities and Networks of Cities in the Creative Metropolis
This book analyses the economic development of cities from the ‘cultural economy’ and ‘creative industry’ perspectives, examining and differentiating them as two related but distinct segments of contemporary city economies. The authors argue that although they are normally conflated, the first is largely subsidized while the second is highly entrepreneurial hence they actually make very different kinds of contribution to a city’s character, attra…
