  • Legality rating and corporate efficiency

    Open Access•Marco A DeBenedetto, Michele G Giuranno et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2024

Promoting legality and productivity is a central issue in modern economies. In this paper, we investigate the implications of a public policy that aims at achieving these goals through the adoption of the so-called legality rating (LR). The latter reduces corporate risk uncertainty by abating asymmetric information between companies that use good legal, fiscal and ethical practices and the credit system. We match companies whose legal and ethical…

  • Predicting recessions with a frontier measure of output gap

Open Access•Camilla Mastromarco, Léopold Simar et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2021

Despite the long and great history, developed institutions, and high level of physical and human capital, the Italian economy has been fairly stagnant during the last three decades. In this paper, we merge two streams of literature: nonparametric methods to estimate frontier efficiency of an economy, which allows us to develop a new measure of output gap, and nonparametric methods to estimate probability of an economic recession. To illustrate th…

  • Exports, immigration and human capital in US states

    Sucharita Ghosh, Camilla Mastromarco•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Using a Bayesian approach we estimate a stochastic frontier model to measure the productivity effects of state-level exports and immigration to each of the 50 US states. The results show that state productivity is affected positively by both state exports and immigrants arriving with embodied human capital. The efficiency model also reveals that the interaction of incoming immigrants with previously accumulated human capital in the host state imp…
