The role of urban planning in climate adaptation
This paper empirically analyses the relationship between urban form and Urban Heat Island (UHI) in a dataset of 523 European cities that matches remotely sensed land-use and surface temperature data. A UHI anomaly is defined as an uninterrupted streak of days where the temperature differential measured at 12.00 AM between the city core and its surroundings is higher than a given threshold. From this definition, three UHI indicators are obtained: …
Do city dwellers care about peri-urban land use? The case of environment-friendly agriculture around Milan
Undeveloped land adjacent to urban areas has a strong potential to generate high amenity values to urban dwellers via the adoption of environment-friendly agricultural practices. Yet, there is a lack of specific policy measures tailored to unlock such potential and a scant knowledge of the preferences of the main beneficiaries. Analysis of data from a Choice Experiment in the municipality of Milan based on current policy deliverables shows that a…
Social interaction and technology adoption
Willingness to pay for alternative features of land-use policies
Changes in urban green spaces’ value perception
Institutional fragmentation and urbanization in European Union cities
The relationship between institutional fragmentation and the spatial extent of cities in Europe’s functional urban areas is examined. European Union planning regulations vary across member states, but in most cases local authorities determine land use within the more general regulatory frameworks set by national or subnational authorities. More decentralized and fragmented settings may favour urban sprawl, allowing developers to avoid land-use re…
Social Interaction and Technology Adoption
A spatial econometric analysis of land use efficiency in large and small municipalities
Urban Systems, Urbanization Dynamics and Land Use in Italy
Sustainability of agriculture is challenged by increasing sprawl in urban agglomerations. Under increasing agglomeration economies in large and even medium sized cities, more and more soil is being subtracted to agriculture, depriving agricultural activities of the main production factor. The extent to which the expanding urbanization threatens agricultural development depends on the urban spatial structure, however. In this work it is empiricall…
