Population, macroeconomic variables, quality of life, and interprovincial migration of Italians and foreigners
We study Italian interprovincial migration flows, analysing total migrants, Italians and foreigners separately. Along with traditional gravity variables, we introduce a quality-of-life index. The results show distinct and heterogeneous effects of migration determinants across national groups and different internal migration corridors. Foreigners exhibit higher mobility and respond more strongly to labour market differentials compared with Italian…
Can five sun-and-sand Sardinian destinations host longer visits
This work studies the determinants of the length of stay for different categories of tourists who visit five destinations in Southern Sardinia. For this purpose, primary data were collected during the summer season 2019. The full sample is analysed first, then the study proceeds with sub-samples comparing seniors with young, women with men, and Italians with foreigners. All estimates are performed using ordinary least squares and zero truncated n…
Analysing the drivers of itemised tourism expenditure from the UK using survey data
The aim of this study is to analyse factors influencing the expenditure of British travellers on different items of consumption. Original data were collected using a questionnaire. The total sample size is 1361. Differences are observed on the relevance of the explanatory variables for each categories of expenditure and on the magnitude of their effects. Length of stay is the only driver which is significant across all categories. Its effect is n…
Migration flows by educational attainment: Disentangling the heterogeneous role of push and pull factors
This paper analyzes the determining factors of South to Center‐North migration flows in Italy for five different educational groups. We find strong support for the paramount role of total and education‐specific migration networks. Furthermore, we unveil an inverse relationship between the magnitude of the response of migration flows by educational level and the regional endowment of human capital. More generally, it emerges that once migrants edu…
A Microeconomics Analysis of the Per Diem Expenditure of British Travellers
Do Firms Follow Immigrants? Empirical Evidence From Italy
This paper investigates the relationship between immigration and firms for Italy at NUTS 3 level, during the period 2012–2015. The main contribution to the existing literature is to provide results disaggregated at the sectoral level, taking into account the important heterogeneities existing across both provinces and sectors. At the aggregate level, the main result is the positive effect of immigrants on both the number of local units and employ…
The impact of immigration on output and its components: A sectoral analysis for Italy at regional level
Internal migration in Italy. Long-run analysis of push and pull factors across regions and macro-areas of the country
The great majority of empirical studies on internal migration across Italian regions either ignores the long-run perspective of the phenomenon or do not consider push and pull factors separately. In addition, Centre-North to South flows, intra-South and intra-Centre-North migration have not been studied. We aim to fill this gap and tackle interregional migration flows from different geographical perspectives. We apply four panel data estimators w…
A long‐run analysis of push and pull factors of internal migration in Italy. Estimation of a gravity model with human capital using homogeneous and heterogeneous approaches
