  • Employment effects of investment grants and firm heterogeneity

    Open Access•Eva Dettmann, Antje Weyh et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2025•References: 9

This study estimates the firm-level employment effects of investment grants in Germany. In addition to the average treatment effect on the treated, we examine discrimination in the funding rules as a potential source of effect heterogeneity. The subsample ana…

  • How many gaps are there? Investigating the regional dimension of the gender commuting gap

Open Access•Michaela Fuchs, Ramona Jost et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2024•References: 16

This paper investigates the gender gap in commuting by differentiating between the place of residence and work in urban and rural regions. Using administrative geo-referenced data for Germany and applying decomposition techniques, we provide evidence for a triple gap in commuting to the disadvantage of women. • Does working at a start-up pay off

Open Access•Daniel Fackler, Lisa Hölscher et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2022

Using representative linked employer-employee data for Germany, this paper analyzes short- and long-run differences in labor market performance of workers joining start-ups instead of incumbent firms. Applying entropy balancing and following individuals over ten years, we find huge and long-lasting drawbacks from entering a start-up in terms of wages, yearly income, and (un)employment. These disadvantages hold for all groups of workers and types …

  • Where do women earn more than men? Explaining regional differences in the gender pay gap

Open Access•Michaela Fuchs, Anja Rossen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2021

This paper provides new evidence on the magnitude and determinants of regional differences in the gender pay gap. On the basis of a comprehensive data set of all full‐time employees in Germany, we explain the profound variation of the gender pay gap at a small‐scale level with theory‐based individual and job‐related characteristics. Using the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition, we find pronounced spatial differences in the impact of the considered dete…
