This article aims to reopen discussion of the Renaissance ars historica, a genre that has garnered little attention in modern scholarship. It does so by using a set of computational tools to measure the quantitative occurrence of terms related to artistry and cognition in Johann Wolff's collection of historical-method texts entitled “Artis Historicae Penus” (1579). Like the period's historical writing, which amalgamated aesthetics and historiogra…

Waking the Dead
Waking the Dead: Miguel de Cervantes’ Numancia and the Problem of Golden Age Historical Drama Sofie Kluge Much critical discussion of Miguel de Cervantes’ La Numancia, presumably written between 1580 and 1585 (Ynduráin 23), has centered on its tragic elements (de Armas; Edwards; Friedman; Hermenegildo; Lewis-Smith; Maestro; Méndez; Ponce-Hegenauer). Seeing that all the major Golden Age “preceptistas”, who took their cue from Cervantes’ generation…
Topologisk poetik i Viktor Šklovskijs Prosateorien
Though not explicitly addressed as such, the literary topos plays a crucial role in Russian literary theorist Victor Shklovsky’s Theory of Prose (1925). On the backdrop of a critical discussion of the ‘symbolist’ conception of literature and of the ‘ethnographical school’s’ exploration of literary motifs, Shklovsky here presents what can be understood as a genuine topological poetics: A poetics bent on the ‘formulaic’ as quintessential literary d…

Troubled Ascent Towards Perfection
The article demonstrates how the 4th canto of Giovan Battista Marino’s Adone (1623) reflects the perennial, but recently augmented antagonism between moral concerns and aesthetic interests. It is argued, that this quintessential Counter-Reformation issue is discernible in the “Novelletta” canto’s ambiguous concern with the increasing amount of material obstacles perceived on the way to spiritual excellence, observable on different textual levels:…
Góngora's Heresy
This article proposes an interpretation of the polemics surrounding the publication of Góngora's first Soledad (1613) in the light of the Platonic critique of literature, arguing that behind the classicist suppression of Góngora's aesthetic ‘errors' we find a Platonic-Christian suspicion of the persuasive power of ‘false' poetic language and the ‘immoral hedonism' of non-didactic art (‘the poets' beautiful lies'). Failing to understand the ‘divis…
