  • Giovanni Manardo and Jacques Dubois on John Mesuë’s Medical Substances

    Open Access•Dorothea Heitsch•ARTICLE•Arts et Savoirs•2021

At the crossroads of translation, cultural exchange, humanistic rhetoric, the medical schools of Italy and France, printing, and transnational conversations, Opera Mesuae represents a paradigm of Renaissance medical anthropology. In comparing a number of entries by Giovanni Manardo and Jacques Dubois (Sylvius), I propose to situate this work in the quarrel of the simples aimed at reassessing the contributions of the Arab world to early modern sci…

  • Female love-melancholy in Hélisenne de Crenne's Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent d’amours (1538)

    Open Access•Dorothea Heitsch•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2009

Marguerite Briet's novel Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent d’amours can be read as an early modern case study. I place it in the context of contemporary medical, philosophical, and literary views regarding the relationship between body and mind, descriptions of ecstasy, and accounts of love and melancholy. I show that the ‘dolce stil novo’ with its pneumo-physiology is one literary tradition, which together with the medical Galenic discour…

  • Concurrence, émulation, espionnage

    Dorothea Heitsch•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2003

In 1551, two French translations of Leone Ebreo’s Dialoghi d’amore were printed in Lyon. By tracing the publishing history of these two texts within their environment, it is possible to shed some light on the printing milieu in Lyon, to determine why both Pontus de Tyard and Denis Sauvage might have chosen to translate Ebreo’s dialogues, and why the publishers Jean de Tournes and Guillaume Roville respectively might have decided to bring out thei…

  • L'Epistre consolatoire de messire Jean Boccace envoyée au Signeur Pino de Rossi

Marguerite De Cambis, Colette H Winn et al.•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2003

  • Practising Reform in Montaigne's Essais

    Dorothea Heitsch•BOOK•Practising Reform in Montaigne's…•2000

This volume permits a new approach to Montaigne's essays from the point of view of the art of writing and style. Its particular hermeneutic position, which distinguishes it from other investigations, is that Nietzsche is used as a mediator.

  • Approaching Death by Writing

    Dorothea B Heitsch, Dorothea Heitsch•ARTICLE•Literature and medicine•2000

Heitsch examines the ways in which Montaigne's essays challenged and altered the conventions of the literature of consolation as he wrote to heal the loss of his best friend, Etienne de La Bo tie. Heitsch finds in Montaigne's work not only a system of consolation for others, but also a movement toward consolation and peace for the writer himself, as well as a complex and dangerous challenging of social, religious, and political orthodoxies
