Our only record of this garment - like many non-elite objects - is a written description in a posthumous inventory, but this article shows how we can reconstruct this doublet through a combination of archival, visual, material sources and hands-on experimental methods. Remaking Dress History: Applying Reconstruction Methods to Early Modern Textiles and Clothing
In this Textile History Special Issue, which focuses on fashionable textiles and dress that span from everyday clothing to costly garments c. 1550–1650, we propose an innovative account of how different approaches of ‘re-methods’ offer scholars new ways to research and share findings about the making, wearing, meaning and historical importance of textiles and clothing. Prodigal Years? Negotiating Luxury and Fashioning Identity in a Seventeenth-century Account Book
Focusing on the account book of the MP and antiquary Sir Edward Dering (1598–1644), which covers the decade of his life in which he came of age, was knighted, and embarked on an ambitious political and courtly career, this article argues that his account book was a space in which Dering recorded momentous life events and meditated upon his purchases. Dering reveled in his attire, spending a great deal of money on it, as well as taking the time to…
Women, Work and Sociability in Early Modern London
Female voices are often hard to locate in early modern texts, though over the past thirty years pioneering scholars such as Laura Gowing have shown that legal records are invaluable sources of fema
