Visualization, mapping, and the history of mobility in the Middle Ages
This paper reviews digital methods of scholarship for visualization and mapping, and it then shows how creative and experimental visualization can help us to study the extensive networks that lay behind human mobility, from trade to war, communication, pilgrimage, migration, and much else. In the process, the paper will familiarize historians with the key aspects of digital methods from amalgamating large quantities of data to finding patterns wi…
Mapping the Way of St. James
Every year, more historians and scholars in related humanities disciplines are using Geographical Information Systems ( GIS ) and mapping technology in their research. The field of spatial history/spatial humanities is growing. Yet, many scholars are still unaware of the potential of using mapping technology to interpret the past and further their academic research. Mapping helps us to see the movement of people and ideas over time and thereby ra…

Assemblies of the clergy in early modern Europe
This paper examines assemblies of the clergy in early modern Castile and France. It provides a short overview of the representative nature of these assemblies, their functions, and their power over the ecclesiastical purse strings. In the process it argues that, in addition to secular representative institutions, historians need to take a closer look at ecclesiastical assemblies in order to understand politics, finance and representation in Catho…
Clerical Opposition in Habsburg Castile
Church–State relations in early modern Europe were often turbulent. Princes and clergy regularly clashed over ecclesiastical appointments, jurisdiction and finances. Such conflicts were common in both Protestant and Catholic principalities. Yet, for many historians, Habsburg Castile is still the Catholic Monarchy, and any conflict between Church and State there is seen as an aberration. This article argues that clerical opposition in Castile was …
The Castilian Assembly of the Clergy in the sixteenth century
In this article, Scan Perrone draws attention to the Assembly of the Clergy in Castile in the early-modern period. This is a significant representative institution with a long history of active participation in government which has received little attention from scholars outside Spain. The Assembly was never a part of the Cortes of Castile, but was made up by delegates from the Cathedral Chapters, excluding the bishops themselves, which negotiate…
