Leone de' Sommi and Jewish Theatre in Renaissance Mantua
This is a study of a Renaissance artist and his patrons, but with an added complication, insofar as Leone de' Sommi, the gifted academician and playwright in the employ of the dukes of Mantua in the second half of the sixteenth century, was Jewish and a lifelong promoter and protector of his community. The article deals with the complex relationship between the court and the Jewish "università" concerning the drama and the way in which dramatic p…
Spenser's Redcrosse Knight
In Canto ix of the first book of The Faerie Queene, Spenser's Redcrosse Knight encounters Despaire. The episode is a perfect case in point with regard to the relationship between contemporary ideas and literature. At a primary level of enquiry, despair requires no special commentary, for is it not the abandonment of hope which leads to despondency and suicide, much as the term would be understood in any age? Of necessity it must be

The legacy of John Frampton
John Frampton was one of the Bristol merchants in the Spanish trade who suffered the confiscation of his goods and imprisonment by the Inquisition in Seville on trumped up charges, largely in compensation for the piracy practiced by the English on the high seas. A striking account of his experiences as a prisoner who was later condemned to ‘house‐arrest’ in Spain for the rest of his days, and of his eventual escape, can be pieced together from th…
Concerning Sex Changes
This article examines the medical literature of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries concerning the sexual transmutation of females into males. One explanation for the phenomenon, the so-called one-sex model attributed to Aristotle, does not figure prominently in the writings of the early physicians after 1575. That such a transformation was even possible was entirely discounted by 1600. By implication, those studies of Renaissance cultu…
Petrarch's "Conversion" on Mont Ventoux and the Patterns of Religious Experience

Calderón’s La dama duende and the Theater of Suspense
An Early Music Dictionary
This book is a handsome production: tastefully designed and bound, printed on fine cream paper using elegant typefaces, the text "hung" from a top-of-the-page rule, with generous margins. As a reference and research tool it is precisely what it says it is, namely an exhaustive compilation of musical terms inclusively defined, derived from dictionaries, musical treaties, manuals, and commentaries produced in English be- tween 1500 and 1740.The term…
