How Apocalyptic Disrupts Theological Tradition Tradition and Apocalypse
Coming from a theologian who has maintained a high medieval view of Nicene Orthodoxy against the ravages of Augustinianism, this review essay of David Bentley Hart's Tradition and Apocalypse excavates the unspoken liberal Protestant provenance of his historicist critique of predominant notions of sacred tradition in Orthodox and Catholic circles. Critiques of John Henry Newman and Maurice Blondel demonstrate this claim. His appeal to apocalyptic …
Luther and the “Repair of Chalcedon”1
Luther's Christology has long been suspected of deviating from the Chalcedonian Definition. Analysis of the suspicions raises in turn questions about Chalcedon as an incoherent compromise between the forces of Cyril and Leo. Complicating the issue is the metaphysical rendering of hypostasis as suppositum in medieval Western scholasticism. Luther's theopaschite Christology presses for the “repair” of Chalcedon by situating the Antiochene concern f…
The Incarnation of the Eternal Son
In this contribution the author responds to Bruce Marshall's Thomist critique of Barth's theology, at the cost of a certain revision of Barth's mature exploration of the “being-for-others” of the eternal Son in CD IV/1. Affirming the eternity of the Son, the Logos asarkos and thus of the immanent Trinity, socially modeled, the article argues that this revision follows the cutting-edge of Barth's thought and provides a dispositional ontology which…
The experience of incongruous grace
This symposium contribution scrutinizes Zahl’s treatise on the Holy Spirit and Christian experience from the perspective of his utilization of Augustine, Luther and Melanchthon. It exposits his argument as a critical retrieval of the early Reformation doctrine of justification by the Spirit’s sanctification which is the gift of faith, recognizable as affective transformation from servile fear to filial trust. It qualifies his genealogy of the dis…
Hitler's theology
In this article the author updates and renews his thesis from 2013 about the Weimarization of American political culture. He argues that fascism is an endemic modern possibility that has a theological dimension that becomes visible when the left‐right ideological binary descending from the French Revolution is set aside. Reviewing the evidence from Hitler's Table Talks, he shows how Hitler both understood himself as a progressive change agent and…
