  • Philosemitism in Late Sixteenth- and Seventeenth- Century Iberia

    David L Graizbord, David Graizbord•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•2007

The article examines selected evidence of Old Christian "philosemitism" from the mid-sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in order to explain Judeophilia as a general phenomenon of early modern Iberian culture. In particular, the work dissects the relationship between the Judeophile ideas of a few inquisitorial suspects--some notorious, one unknown--and an inquisitorial culture of persecution fixated on real and imagined Judaizing. • Souls in Dispute

David L Graizbord, David Graizbord et al.•BOOK•Souls in Dispute•2004

Throughout the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula was home to a rich cultural mix of Christians, Jews, and Muslims. At the end of the fifteenth century, however, the last Islamic stronghold fell, and Jews were forced either to convert to Christianity or to face expulsion. Thousands left for other parts of Europe and Asia, eventually establishing Sephardic communities in Amsterdam, Venice, Istanbul, southwestern France, and elsewhere. More than a …
