  • The Blessed Tree in the works of Ibn Barrajān of Seville (d. 536/1141)

    Open Access•Sam Jaffe, S N Jaffe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2023

In his commentary on the Light Verse (Q. 24:35), the Andalusian mystic and Qurʾān exegete Abū al-Ḥakam Ibn Barrajān (d. 1141) presents the blessed tree (al-shajara al-mubāraka) not simply as a terrestrial olive tree in Syria or even as a mystical allegory, but as the ultimate locus of divine disclosure and the highest metaphysical entity in the cosmos that subsumes the world of creation. This article assesses the originality of Ibn Barrajān’s con…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•S N Jaffe, Guillermo Graíño Ferrer•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2023•References: 4

The article introduces the second part of a symposium, “The Crowd in the History of Political Thought,” which is being published as a two-part special issue, and which explores visions of the role of the people and populism in the writings of past thinkers. The articles in this second part are by European scholars with disparate interests and approaches to the history of political thought. Populism proves difficult to define, partly because popul…

  • Vast Personal Forces

    Open Access•N Jaffe, S N Jaffe•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Modern discussions of freedom focus on negative liberty or nondomination. In his portrait of the Athenian democracy, Thucydides thematizes the psychology of ancient freedom. By focusing on the psychology of the demos, Thucydides shows how democratic imperialism unfolds from the experience of freedom as a kind of felt power. His analysis offers us a way to think about contemporary populism. In representative democracy, the connection between power…

The article introduces a symposium, “The Crowd in the History of Political Thought,” which is being published as a two-part special issue. The articles are by American and European scholars with disparate interests and approaches to the history of political thought. Some engage contemporary questions, while others offer interpretive analyses. Today, commentators, scholars, and pundits alike ignore the history of political thought to the detriment…

  • Sparta’s Greatest πρόφασις for War

Sam Jaffe, S N Jaffe•CHAPTER•Thucydides on the Outbreak of War•2017

This chapter compares Thucydides’ truest πρόφασις for the Peloponnesian War with the logic of Sparta’s greatest πρόφασις for it. Thucydides first recreates a third Corinthian speech, which reveals the general Peloponnesian necessity for war. He then depicts a series of embassies Sparta uses to drum up the greatest πρόφασις for it, involving an exchange of curses—i.e. the honor of the gods—which Thucydides intentionally narrates in a Herodotean st…

  • The Manifest Quarrels

    S N Jaffe•CHAPTER•Thucydides on the Outbreak of War•2017

This chapter scrutinizes the key decision points in Thucydides’ account of the quarrels that trigger the Peloponnesian War. It examines the political psychology of the actors as revealed through the interplay between the narrative and speeches, with an emphasis on Thucydides’ account of the strategic and legal issues that lead to the collapse of the Thirty Years’ Peace. The interpretation focuses on appeals to justice, necessity, and advantage, s…

  • Conclusion

    S N Jaffe•CHAPTER•Thucydides on the Outbreak of War•2017

The Conclusion first examines a handful of claims that Thucydides reveals about the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War in the later books, and then discusses the manner in which the interpretation of book one offered in the study furnishes a framework for the interpretation of the later books of the History. It focuses on the manner in which the universal relates to the particular in Thucydides’ thought, with an emphasis on how the more corporate …

  • The Athenian Logic of the Truest πρόφασις

    S N Jaffe•CHAPTER•Thucydides on the Outbreak of War•2017

This chapter applies several psychological claims of the Spartan Congress to the subsequent Pentecontaetia, which outlines the growth of Athenian power after the Persian Wars, and which corroborates its main claims. The chapters also furnish a portrait of Spartan response to Athenian power across time and so help explain why Sparta and her allies went to war only in 432 bc. The dual presentation of the growth of Athenian power and Spartan respons…

  • Thucydides on the Outbreak of War

Sam Jaffe, S N Jaffe•BOOK•Thucydides on the Outbreak of War•2017

This project illuminates Thucydides’ political thought through a novel interpretation of the first book of the History of the Peloponnesian War. It explores how Thucydides reveals the human causes of war through the outbreak of a particular war, the Peloponnesian war. \nThe primary claim is that Thucydides intends the breakdown of the Thirty Years’ Peace between Athens and the Peloponnesians, which inaugurates the great Peloponnesian war, to be u…
