  • Tourism and productivity in Nuts regions

Georges Harb, Charbel Bassil et al.•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2026

We employ data on 155 NUTS regions over 1996–2018 and assess the relationship between tourism and regional total factor productivity (TFP). We expand in two directions the literature on the Tourism-Led-Efficiency hypothesis at a sub-national level: methodologically, we are the first to use a large panel dataset framework; conceptually, this is the first study to disentangle the productivity effects of domestic tourism from those of foreign touris…

  • Aid for trade and tourism in aid-recipient countries

Open Access•Georges Harb, Charbel Bassil et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2026

Using a sample of 32 countries, we examine the effect of aid for trade (AfT) on tourism in aid beneficiaries over 2002-2019. Our investigation reveals that AfT supports tourism receipts in aid recipients. Specifically, two AfT categories are positively associated with tourism receipts in AfT recipients: AfT targeting infrastructure and AfT addressing trade policy, with a larger effect of the former. Furthermore, our analysis reveals the following…

  • Mortgage debt and domestic and outbound travel expenditures

Open Access•Hassan F Gholipour, Mohammad Reza Farzanegan et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2025

We explore the relationship between the mortgage debt of households and their spending on domestic and outbound tourism and travel. We estimate a dynamic panel data model for a sample of 27 countries for 2010-2021, and find evidence for a negative relationship. Hence, we show that in countries where the mortgage per capita is high, residents allocate fewer expenditures on domestic and outbound tourism. We also find that the reduction in outbound …

  • The effect of climate change on different types of international visitors in Western Australia

Open Access•Ghialy Yap, Charbel Bassil•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism…•2025•References: 2

This paper examines the effects of climate change on tourist arrivals to Western Australia, which we classify according to the purpose of their visit (business, education, holiday, visitors of friends and relatives (VFR), and employment). We construct a temperature variability indicator that measures the deviation of extreme temperatures from the average temperature. Overall, the results reveal that temperature variabilities have long-term dimini…

  • Can immigration moderate the adverse effects of political instability on international tourism? A case study of Australia

    Open Access•Charbel Bassil, Ghialy Yap•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2024

We estimate the impact of political instability and the population of immigrants in Australia on the flow of international tourist arrivals. We hypothesize that political instability has a short-term negative effect while the population of immigrants in Australia may have a positive or negative effect depending on time span. Moreover, we postulate that the population of immigrants resorbs in the short run partially or totally the adverse effect o…

  • Tourism research for the GCC region

Open Access•Ali Salman Saleh, Charbel Bassil et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2022

Tourism in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has recently been considered by policymakers as a new avenue for economic diversification. Despite the considerable literature concerning the impact of tourism worldwide, only a limited number of studies have looked at the tourism sector in the GCC region or analyzed its economic, sociocultural, and environmental impacts. This article therefore conducts a systematic review of the state of th…

  • Harnessing cross-region disparities to assess the impact of tourism on regional growth in Europe

Georges Harb, Charbel Bassil•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2021

We use regional data across 27 European countries and look into the effect of tourist arrivals on regional growth during 2000–2017. The research is set in an augmented Solow model estimated via a rich and flexible empirical strategy, with different underlying assumptions about the impacts of the regressors and unobservables. A first demarcation line across our set of estimators is between the ‘pooled’ estimators (assuming common parameters across…

  • Interaction entre racines unitaires et ruptures structurelles

    Charbel Bassil•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2012•Cited by: 1
