The Fiscal Channel of Unconventional Monetary Policy
The aim of this article is to clarify the meaning and functioning of the ‘fiscal channel' of unconventional monetary policies. New Keynesians present it as a key transmission channel of unconventional monetary policies. However, this channel is generally not analysed in depth, so that it remains a ‘black box', with a need to investigate inside. For this purpose, we build a database of articles mentioning the term ‘fiscal channel', with 82 documen…
Augmented Hyperreality
In 1981, Jean Baudrillard described the entry into the era of hyperreality: the image no longer represents reality, it precedes and produces it. Forty years later, generative artificial intelligence fulfills and surpasses this prophecy. Hyperreality is no longer merely a collective condition imposed by mass media—it becomes a personal device: everyone can now instantly produce their own simulacrum. This text analyzes three anthropological mutatio…
AI and the sacred
This two-part article analyzes the ancient and mystical origins of artificial intelligence (AI). First, it explains that AI has precedents in mystical thought and finds relevance in certain anthropological concepts. Next, we'll look at how ancient philosophy has helped to explain in advance the way in which we - and in particular students - use artificial intelligence as a “mental orthosis”

Lombard Street revisited? Bagehot’s rules and Bernanke’s interpretation
Ben Bernanke first referred to Walter Bagehot’s Lombard Street when he was in the chair of the Board of Governors, and when the Federal Reserve responded to the global financial crisis that began in August 2007. While the literature has dealt with the practice of the Federal Reserve and its compliance or otherwise with Bagehot’s rules, it has not detailed Bernanke’s theory of lending in last resort and the underlying interpretation of Bagehot’s r…
Financial Instability and International-Lender-of-Last-Resort Theory from the Gold Standard to the Dollar System
We identify two approaches to financial crises in the history of political economy, namely, the exogenous approach whereby financial crises are sudden events, and the endogenous approach whereby they arise from a long process. In focusing on the endogenous approach, we study the contributions by Thomas Tooke, Ralph Hawtrey, Hyman Minsky and Charles Kindleberger to the lender-of-last-resort theory, especially in international contexts, under the g…
Threadneedle street meets Lombard street
The paper concerns the reception among central bankers of Bagehot’s ideas on the lender of last resort (LLR). For the period 1999–2017 we construct a database of speeches by G7 central bankers that mention Bagehot. On the basis of this database, we show that there was a boom in mentions of Bagehot during the recent financial crisis. Using the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) codes, we indicate that this increase in the references to Bagehot a…
Theoretical perspectives on the new era of central banking
Financial Crisis
This article analyzes the question of whether central bank capture by the financial sector has increased in the aftermath of the financial crisis beginning in 2007. According to the Public Choice theory, this is inevitable: The financial sector has an increased incentive to capture the central bank for interest rates hikes, inter alia, to prevent inflationary pressures from unconventional monetary policies. On the contrary, for the Post-Keynesian…
