Reimagining Social Work Education
Community college students are an untapped reservoir of talent and including them in social work education aligns with the values of the profession. Yet these students encounter formidable obstacles on the path from a 2-year degree to an affordable social work degree. In this article, we describe the systems thinking underlying a newly instituted Bachelor of Social Work completer program and how this approach was used to address barriers posed by…
Direct detection of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis using targeted next generation sequencing
Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) infections are treated with combinations of antibiotics; however, these regimens are not as efficacious against multidrug and extensively drug resistant MTBC. Phenotypic (growth-based) drug susceptibility testing on slow growing bacteria like MTBC requires many weeks to months to complete, whereas sequencing-based approaches can predict drug resistance (DR) with reduced turnaround time. We sought to devel…
Soil phosphorus dynamics along a short‐term ecological restoration trajectory of a coastal sandplain forest in New Zealand
We aim to understand the impact of ecological restoration on soil biogeochemistry, and the interrelationship between vegetation and soil phosphorus. In a study of two different‐aged soils in coastal New Zealand, soils are described along a transition from abandoned agricultural pasture, through 6‐year old restoration plots, towards forest fragments that have been largely undisturbed for 75 and 166 years. Soil biogeochemistry varied spatially alon…
