  • The situational contingency of virtual and on-site workplace attendance decisions in Germany

Open Access•Joachim Gerich, Natalie Herdegen et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2026

Sickness presenteeism (SP), i.e., working while ill, and sickness absence (SA) reflect alternative responses to ill-health. Although both stem from the same attendance decision process, little is known about how illness severity interacts with workplace conditions, how remote work opportunities influence attendance decisions and what role personal motives play. We draw on data from a factorial survey experiment following the 2024 BIBB/BAuA Employ…

  • Pension Reform Effects in Times of Technological Change and Shifting Task Composition

Open Access•Bernhard Boockmann, Natalie Herdegen et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2026

We study heterogeneity in the effects of a pension reform in Germany: the introduction of the old-age pension for the very long-term insured, which lowered the threshold for full pension receipt from age 65 to 63. Using a regression discontinuity design (RDD) and rich administrative pension data, we estimate the effects of the reform on eligible workers who differ in a number of occupational characteristics. Transitions into the new early retirem…

  • A Factorial Survey on Sickness Presenteeism

Open Access•Joachim Gerich, Natalie Herdegen et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2025

We present new data from a factorial survey experiment on sickness presenteeism, collected as a follow-up to the 2024 BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey – a representative survey of the German workforce. The factorial survey uses hypothetical scenarios to examine how employees decide between going to work, calling in sick, or working from home when experiencing illness. Scenarios systematically vary dimensions such as symptom severity, contagiousness, a…

  • The Minimum Wage

    Open Access•Natalie Herdegen, René Kalweit•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2025•References: 6

We analyse the policy feedback on the minimum wage introduction in Germany, which was the core promise of the Social Democrats in the 2013 elections. Overall, there is no positive policy effect on the electorate's preference for the Social Democrats. We find even the contrary: workers earning below the minimum wage tend to give a negative policy feedback in Eastern Germany. Our main estimation strategy exploits the variation of median wages acros…
