Measuring Accessibility Within Islands
This paper explores the dynamics of marginality and geographic peripherality at the island level, focusing on accessibility within Italy’s two largest islands, Sicily and Sardinia, and exploring their internal variability. It assesses spatial inequalities faced by populations in the islands’ inner areas by leveraging the SNAI (National Strategy for Inner Areas) classification and analyzing travel times from municipalities (Local Administrative Un…
From the historical Roman road network to modern infrastructure in Italy
The road system built during the Roman Empire continues to have a significant impact on modern infrastructure in Italy. This paper examines the historical influence of Roman roads on the development of Italy's motorways and railways. The empirical analysis demonstrates how modern Italian transport infrastructure largely follows the path of the consular trajectories established by the network of Roman roads. These ancient roads, being paved and co…
Trade and Global Value Chains at the Time of Covid-19
The pandemic we are experiencing is, despite its temporary nature, likely to leave a permanent sign on the global trade system. Measures to contain contagion have revealed the greater vulnerability of firms operating in global value chains (GVCs) and especially those located in first-hit countries. The risk is that production reshuffling made possible by automation will increase, and that nations will see incentives for changing the distribution …

Trade Activity Between the EU and Its Neighbouring Countries
The objective of the paper is to examine whether trade activity intensifies over time as the outcome of signed bilateral trade agreements. Focusing on (the trade component of) the European Neighbourhood Policy, the paper conducts a study of trade activity between the EU and its neighbouring countries, attempting to offer a detailed analysis in terms of trade patterns and to investigate whether proximity is combined with higher trade flows, within…
Trends in Disaggregated Import and Export Prices in Europe
We consider carefully the evidence from traded prices (as proxied by unit values) concerning the transmission of the effects of globalisation to domestic labour markets. Using standard index number techniques we decompose changes in sectoral import and export unit values into movements due to changes in pure prices of the initial bundle of goods imported or exported and changes due to upgrading of that bundle. Looking at the imports of selected E…
