The role of emotion in a housing purchase
This paper examines empirically the role of emotion in owning a new build apartment, derived from its representation through mental imaging ('visualization') from marketing techniques, in influencing off-plan purchases in France, and how its effect on satisfaction evaluations of the apartment purchased affects buyer ratings of developer performance. Through structural equation modelling we show that psychological measures of perceived values infl…

The Changing Route to Owner-occupation
The reduction in young adult homeownership rates in Britain in the 1990s was partly caused by demographics and partly by a shift in the income distribution. Most of their relative income deterioration occurred in the first part of the decade, yet young adult homeownership rates continued to fall. This paper extends that analysis by empirically examining whether lender-imposed borrowing restrictions also contributed to their decline, especially si…
The Changing Route to Owner Occupation
The 1990s saw a considerable fall in young adult homeownership rates in Britain. There is a concern that the future might hold further falls as a result of reforms to financing higher education. Using estimates from a housing tenure choice model, this paper conducts micro-simulation analyses to assess how this change could affect young adult homeownership transitions. The simulations reveal that increased student debt levels and the new repayment…
Questioning Women's Movement 'Strategies
Women's movements are often described as adopting “strategies” but studies rarely question how and to what extent movement decisions are actually made. This case study considers the Australian second-wave women's movement's “choice” to pursue workforce participation over care-centred approaches. It finds that the movement was too diverse and decentralized to make any such collective strategic decision. Action was geared to growing the movement an…

A Permanent Change in the Route to Owner Occupation
This paper attempts to explain why home ownership rates among young adults fell in the early 1990s when various indicators suggested it had become more affordable. As a potential explanation, we focus on the relatively slower growth in their incomes and argue that this could signal a fundamental change in behaviour, a change in route adopted into owner occupation, induced by structural economic change. In examining the implications for housing te…
On the Aggregate Housing Market Implications of Labour Market Change
Labor markets in the United Kingdom have undergone important structural changes in recent years. Given the close relationship between labor and housing markets, these changes are likely to have had knock-on effects to housing. This paper examines the quantitative evidence in this area in terms of aggregate housing demand and house prices, set in a life-cycle framework. The paper finds evidence of structural change in the 1990s in the traditional …
