Parsifal in Montserrat
Parsifal (Daniel Mangrané and Carlos Serrano de Osma, 1951) is a little-known film that reflects in its production process some of the twists and turns that Spain and its film culture underwent during early Francoism, as the geopolitical priorities of the Allies in the Second World War evolved into strident Cold War anti-communism. We explore through original documents of the time, available in the censorship archives and film journals, the inter…
Letters to Belvedere
This paper examines the role of participatory cinephilia in the resistance to censorship near the end of the Franco regime in Spain (1968–1974). It takes as its case study the letters pages, or Consultorio, of “Mr Belvedere” in the commercial Barcelona-based film magazine Nuevo Fotogramas. Reconstructing as much as possible the identities and concerns of those who wrote to the magazine, the paper concentrates above all on the distinctive style an…
Spanish Cinema of the 2010s
This article focuses on how Spanish cinema production has echoed the neoliberal Eurozone crisis of 2008 in mainstream (large- and medium-size productions), and in its ‘opposite’ the independent sector, and how the effects of the crisis can be glimpsed (within the independent sector) on music (mostly Punk) documentaries which are not ostensibly about the economy, current politics or even the present. I suggest a course through the different ways i…
Film cultures in Spain's transition
In the story of the fight for democratic freedom and the drive to bring Europe and the world closer to Francoist Spain, Nuevo Fotogramas (NF) deserves a central position. Fuelled by the spirit of May 1968, the long-running Barcelona-based magazine Fotogramas became NF in 1968 and set out to define the pro-democracy struggle in contrast from the Madrid-based film cultures. It also set out to engage with European cultural production as if censorshi…

Auteurism and commerce in contemporary Spanish cinema
This article studies the evolution of auteurism and commerce in Spain using technologies such as the Internet. Spanish directors are becoming mediáticos (media friendly and using media as marketing tools) in response to the new conditions in which the national cinema is immersed among them the saturation in European screens and the ever-present competition with Hollywood. Those directors who can claim the status of auteur do so as part of their c…
Spanish National Cinema
This study examines the discourses of nationalism as they intersected or clashed with Spanish film production from its inception to the present. While the book addresses the discourses around filmmakers such as Almodovar and Medem, whose work has achieved international recognition, Spanish National Cinema is particularly novel in its treatment of a whole range of popular cinema rarely touched on in studies of Spanish cinema. Using accounts of fil…

Santiago Segura
This article looks at Santiago Segura's star status created by the cultural products in which he takes part. These have produced a phenomenon in the Spanish cultural industry that has only recently started to find an interested academic audience. This article seeks to locate this phenomenon in its cultural context, and to concentrate on aspects relevant to the type of masculinity Segura evokes as well as its links with earlier and contemporary di…
Esto no es un juego, es acción mutante ”
INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a crucial period which ultimately directly impacts two individuals health and wellbeing. Within the UK, a standardised pattern of care is established with collaborations across disciplines to the benefit of women and babies. During the COVID19 pandemic, this pattern of care was disrupted to align with protective protocols which until now, has not been formally reported. METHODS: A retrospective, mixed methods study of U…
