  • Women's bargaining power and household budget allocation to human capital

Open Access•Burentegsh Dorjjugder, Rifai Afin et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Oeconomica•2026

In this paper, we explore the association of women's bargaining power with human capital investment within the household. Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS), wave 5, we estimate the determinants of bargaining power with multinomial logit models and the association of bargaining power with food, bad goods, education, and health spending with OLS regression models. We find that the wife's higher education level increases the pr…

  • Effects of lower screening activity during the Covid-19 pandemic on breast cancer patient pathways

    Open Access•Péter Elek, Petra Fadgyas-Freyler et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2022

We examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Hungary based on administrative data until June 2021, covering three pandemic waves. After correcting for trend and seasonality, the number of mammography examinations decreased by 68% in 2020q2, was around its usual level in 2020q3 and was reduced by 20-35% throughout 2020q4-2021q2. The reduction was caused by a combination of supply-si…

  • Regional differences in diabetes across Europe – regression and causal forest analyses

    Open Access•Péter Elek, Alina Biro•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2020

We examine regional differences in diabetes within Europe, and relate them to variations in socio-economic conditions, comorbidities, health behaviour and diabetes management. We use the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) data of 15 European countries and 28,454 individuals, who participated both in the 4th and 7th (year 2011 and 2017) waves of the survey. First, we estimate multivariate regressions, where the outcome varia…

  • Implication of external price referencing and parallel trade on pharmaceutical expenditure

Open Access•Péter Elek, Eszter Takács et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2016•References: 20

External price referencing (EPR) is applied more and more frequently worldwide by payers to control pharmaceutical prices. Together with the parallel trade of pharmaceuticals, EPR may result in lower pharmaceutical prices in higher-income countries and higher prices in lower-income countries, which implies that pharmaceutical expenditure grows more rapidly in the latter than in the former group. Our objective was to assess this hypothesis. We use…
